Help me please!

Nurses Recovery

Published

I am being ordered by the Texas Board of Nursing to undergo a chemical dependency evaluation after submitting a declaratory order packet. I called (MODERATOR EDIT OF NAME: PLEASE DO NOT POST NAMES OF INDIVIDUALS ON THE BOARDS PER TERMS OF SERVICE) and his secretary assured me that he was not biased and rarely went against the patient to receive their license. I'm still extremely nervous because this evaluation will determine if I can even get into clinicals and I have been working my butt off. My offense was 6 years ago. I haven't used since, but I'm scared they will be looking for any fault they can find. I have saved the 1500 for the evaluation and I can't afford an attorney because I'm a single mom and student. Can anyone please give me a clue to what my chances may be!!!

Thanks Sally ;) I appreciate the love!

DUIs don't necessarily mean chemical dependency. Could mean problems with judgement, maturity, lack of foresight, etc. All of that is for a licensed psych professional to sort out. My evaluation in Dallas was $100, lasted an hour and did not include a drug test.

Did you pass everything ?

Find one that you can go to for cheaper. Often times the ones they refer you directly to will tell them what they want to hear. I know of someone this happened to in houston. Do NOT go to right step.

Callahan,

If I give you my email could you forward me the information of where you found an evaluation for $100? I've recently found out I need to have one done and all I've been reading is it's around $1500!!! Please help if you can! Thanks so much!

Sorry posted twice

I would like to talk to you about how you were able to find someone so inexpensive. I am worried about the financial aspects of the evaluation currently

Please email me as well.

Just an idea.. For anyone who was just fired and has to go through the evaluation, I used EAP and scheduled and emergency visit with a psychologist 2 days after I was fired, so it was still within the payperiod and still effective. The counselor I saw had never done an evaluation so she rescheduled me and asked her co-workers in between how to do it. It was accepted by the board and all on my (former) employers dime!

Way Good advice Still

Specializes in OR.

Further back in this thread, someone alluded to not going for the evaluation from somewhere on the BONs list. I don't know about states where the BON runs thier own programs but in my single state experience, where the program is outsourced, an evaluation will not be accepted unless it is from one of thier "approved" evaluators. To me that reads that you have to go to who they tell you to go to as in someone who will say what needs to be said to justify the issuance or continuance of a contract. I gather they've wised to the idea that one could go to thier own psychiatrist who might actually know the person or to an impartial individual who would not have any financial interest in recommending any unnecessary treatment. The things that go on in these programs, if they happened in the real world, would be appalling material for the headlines of newspapers. I tell my non-nursing friends about this and they don't understand how this can even be legal. Maybe it can, but it sure isn't ethical.....

Yeah come to think of it PNAP told me where to get my evaluation done
