ACNP jobs

If you are an ACNP, what type of settings do you work in? Have you held other jobs?

I know where research has told me many ACNPs find jobs, but just curious what the general consensus is of posters here.

Unfortunately, there aren't a lot of ACNP's that participate here. There are a few ACNP's who are regulars but haven't seen them for a while. I've already posted my role multiple times in other threads but for the benefit of keeping this thread active, I work in Adult Critical Care.

I work with one. We are a group of advance practitioners (PAs and NPs) working for the department of surgery at a local hospital.

We perform surgical consults, admit through the ER, oversee surgical patients and first assist in the OR.

I've noticed that. Shame, because I would love to pick brains!

I work with a lot of nurses in FNP programs and they are always baffled as to why I chose ACNP. When I say it's because I want to work inpatient or specialty, I always get "Well FNPs do all of that too". I literally people don't think about the acronym ACNP meaning ACUTE Care Nurse Practitioner. Ugh

Our inpatient ACNPs (the few that are around) work 7 on 14 off for hospitalist positions and in our pulm/surgery/cardio groups that round.

I actually still have some contact with some former classmates (May 2003 and December 2003 grads) and they work in:

Adult Cardiology with Private Practice Group - 4 classmates

Neurosurgery, hospital-based - 1 classmate

Cardio-thoracic Surgery, Critical Care - 1 classmate

ED with a Private Emergency Physician Group - 2 classmates

Adult Critical Care - 2 classmates including myself

Oncology, Academia pursuing PhD - 1 classmate

1 classmate now has a DNP and a few are enrolled in a program.

I've lost contact with 2 classmates

I work with 2 ACNPs who work nights in our ICU. They cover for our pulmonary/critical care group. Our pt population consists of ECMO, VAD, Heart Tx, and the normal mix of ICU pts.

I agree! I wish more participated here! (Though- the ones that do are great!!)

Figured I'd add to the thread by posting the areas where I've personally seen ACNPs working.

I work (as an RN) with 3 in the Neuro ICU.

2 of my professors still work in Cardiac ICU (though they've both worked in different critical care areas too).

1 professor still works on a Trauma unit- rounding on trauma surgery step-down patients.

1 in the ED.

And 1 on a bariatric surgery floor.

Specializes in NICU, telemetry.

Thanks for the responses, everyone!

Are these positions generally 3-12 hour shifts? Or more M-F with some call?

I'm an ACNP. I work inpatient cardiothoracic surgery/transplant. I don't go to the OR, I admit pre-transplant and VAD patients and then care for them postop through to discharge. I work 4 x 10hr shifts, rotate weekends and holidays, no call. Many of my classmates work in critical care units in my hospital, which recently moved to NP model.
