UTHSC Houston FNP Fall 2014
Hey y'all!! I just applied for the UTHSC FNP 2015 cohort!! For those of you who got accepted can you tell me a little about your application and stats? GPA, GRE, reference letters, etc. Do you know how many people apply and how many they accept each year? Also, I read that you don't have to interview?! That's insane!! I just had my interview with UT Austin for their FNP program today and the interviewer told me they are interviewing 80 people and will only admit 15!! I look forward to your responses!

Night shift and Sleeping
ARE YOU FREAKIN' KIDDING ME?!?!?! I have never heard of night shifters getting to sleep on the job. I work on a cardiac step down unit and we are as busy if not busier than day shift. Now I understand why everyone thinks night shift is lazy, at first I didn't get it, but if there are nurses out there that actually have time to sleep... I'm just appalled to be honest. I just don't know what else to say. I hope potential RNs out there aren't reading these posts and thinking for one second that night shift is some how easier and you may even get to sleep and get paid. IT'S NOT TRUE!!! Nursing is a 24 hour job and it's hard work night or day!!!

New Grads or Soon to Be
Hi! Thank you! I don't really know anything about the Odessa/Midland hospitals other than they were hiring and very eager to have BSN prepared nurses! I don't know a whole lot other than that b/c I didn't apply there, but I did have a friend who did and she was the first one of the first people to get a job in our class!!! Good Luck on your interview with Seton. Out of the interviews I have been to, they are very friendly and eager to help you, help yourself! haha Here are some interview questions that I practiced with and they definitely helped me: 1. what are you strengths and weaknesses(improvements)? 2. how do you think your strengths and weaknesses can help you as a nurse? 3. what are your long term and short term goals or where do you see yourself in 5 years? 4. What are some characteristics you have seen in instructors or supervisors that you would want in a supervisor? 5. what are some characteristics you would not want in a supervisor 6. what do you look for in an employer? 7. What characteristics do you think an employer should look for in their employees? 8. when was there a time you had a conflict and how did you handle it or what did you learn from it? 9. What does teamwork mean to you? 10. what does professionalism mean to you? 11. what are 3 medical diagnosis of patients you had in the hospital that you enjoyed? 12. why this hospital? 13. why nursing? 14. what did you enjoy most about nursing school? 15. now this can come at the beginning or end of the interview what questions do you have for us or do you have any questions.......HAVE QUESTIONS EX: WHAT ARE SOME CHALLENGES YOU HAVE ON YOUR PARTICULAR UNIT?.... WHAT OPPORTUNITIES DO YOU HAVE FOR ADVANCEMENT IN YOUR COMPANY? 16. tell me about yourself 17. Depending on what floor you are working for, brush up on some general knowledge about that floor. For example I went through my NCLEX book and reviewed cardiac issues (CHF, angina, MI, etc.) I really hope this helps and again good luck on your interview! Relax, be yourself, and you should be fine!! :)

Yes! I applied for the June cohort and my specialty is medsurge, cardiac medsure, and trauma medsurge. I think that's why I've been given several interview opportunities b/c I didn't over specialize. I'll get back to you by the end of next week, shoot me an email or something next weekend and I can help you out!

The Lowdown on Austin Hospitals
emup01, I actually got a call on Monday March 29 for SMC-Austin!! I also have gotten an e-mail and a call from SMC-Hays and SMC-Williamson this week!! I haven't had an interview with them yet, but I would go over basic interview questions with some of your buddies just to get you warmed up... other than that I really have no idea what they could ask... possibly scenario questions but there's really nothing you could prepare for with scenario questions, you just have to hope you know the right answer! Sorry if I am not much help, but by the end of next week I will have 2 interviews under my belt and maybe then I can give you some tips! :) Good Luck w/ everything!! Mattie
