So I have a question for you all that I thought might be a fun but disturbing topic? What's the most babbling thing you have seen a medical professional do or say? During my clinical rotation as a student nurse I was in the room with an RT who thought he was funny and was telling the nonverbal but alert pt that she was ugly and her face was hideous. I was in shock and being a young nursing student (19) I really didn't know how to react to that and kept my mouth shut. Now I would have snapped. Looking back I wish I had the courage to say something.

That RT has serious issues. Very disturbing.

I worked with a nurse and we were in the room with a couple and the husband had just passed, ready to give post mortem care.

The wife was in such a shock, that she kept saying how peaceful her husband looked, and he was still such a handsome man, so good looking repeating it over and over..."why just drop dead gorgeous" says the nurse I was in the room with.....Uhm, ok then.....

I worked with a nurse who was a smart, nice, fun person but boy, oh, boy, did she love to talk about her sex life! She did not hold back. She'd talk about it in a normal voice at the nurses station, in the break room, in the hallways...anywhere. Didn't matter who was around. She wore a form fitting t-shirt on Christmas Day that said "Santa's Little Vixen". She was eventually let go after a new nurse she was precepting (a FEMALE nurse) got so offended by all the talk that she filed a sexual harassment charge against her.

About five years ago I was working at a subacute facility. One of my patients was nonverbal and globally aphasic secondary to a major CVA.

Another nurse, who happened to be a personal friend of mine, walked into the patient's room as I was administering medications through the PEG tube. My friend took one look at the family pictures on the patient's wall and said, "Those are some of the ugliest people I've seen in a long time. They look like baboons!"

The patient rolled her eyes and started clenching her fists, so I suspect she understood everything that was said.

Not at all. Just slipped out---and the nurse was so bright red....

Back in the day when we used needles to access IV lines for piggybacks, one had slipped out.

I watched a nurse pick it up off the FLOOR and calmly stick it back in the line.

Ugh, how unprofessional! I would be so upset if I heard someone talking to a patient that way.

Fortunately the only gaffe I can think of is when I said "I think your mom is waiting outside" to a patient (in her 50s or 60s if I recall) and she said that's my best friend. Ooops.
