Would you feel uncomfortable with your coworkers caring for you?

Nurses Relations

Published

My facility offers free care if we get maternity/OB care there. This is awesome but I don't know how I feel about coworkers being that personal with me. I don't work on the OB unit but I do know that the nurses there are phenomenal....am I paranoid or right in being wary about delivering there?

I don't have a lot of choice about where I go for hospitalized care, as we are the only hospital, and are self insured. But my ED friends go to great lengths for me, and on the floors, I have even had my former students be my nurses! (they were more nervous than I was, lol). The nursing supervisor came in to check on me (old friend). Frankly, I felt cherished and protected. But then I'm not particularly body shy.

I hope I wouldn't ever be sick enough to be admitted to the ICU where I am employed, but in the event I were, I know I would be in good hands. Some of us have actually hand picked who could take care of us if ever needed, in a somewhat joking way. I have someone designated to be the "plucker" of those rogue eyebrow hairs & everyone agrees with which incompetent physicians should not be allowed anywhere near us.

I was cared for at my facility and it was fabulous. They knew I worked there and was an RN so I feel like I got the "VIP" treatment. I work with some awesome co-workers. I have cared for coworkers as well. Just have to maintain professionalism and privacy.

If I have a psychotic break, it's probably because of my job and coworkers.

So it only seems fair that they should have to take care of me.

I have had surgery, pyleoneophritis and pneumonia all at the hospital where I worked. The pyleo was on my floor where I was currently working. The staff was terrific!!!! They teased me unmercifully, and made my stay less miserable. For instance, I asked for pain medication and the RN brought my injection in with a chest tube insertion needle taped to the syringe and told me to roll over!!! LOL One nurse brought me in a Golytely gallon jug filled with water and told me to drink it as a prep for IVP!! LOL they were so funny. And when I had surgery, they spoiled me and took such GREAT care of me. I would have care where I worked in a heart beat, if I still worked in a hospital!!!!!

I think it is very telling that this is even an issue. This tells me that privacy isn't respected in that location. That people gossips about what they see and hear at that location.

What we judge about others and what we talk about others, we generally are afraid they will do so with us.
