The Mockery of Nursing

Nurses Relations

Published

Just a bit ago the top three threads involved:

1.I have a DWI. Can I be a nurse?

2.I am stupid. Can I be a nurse?

3.If it takes me five times to pass NCLEX, Can I be nurse.

Not much left to add. Says it all.

Now, that brings up another thought. What exactly, are "critical thinking skills"?

Learn a whole bunch of stuff about something. Remember all of it. Then use deductive reasoning to solve problems.

And, why has the nursing profession latched onto that phrase as it's domain?

Only those who enter the Mystic Portal are allowed to know that. There you may also find the reason for "evidence-based practice" being something other than "do what works" or even (gasp!!) something as quaint as The Scientific Method ohnooooeeeees! We can't use something a scientist would use! We're nurses!!! We need to have our own nurse words for that!

Those buzzphrases are really good to inject into a conversation when you want to sound professorial and the actual content of your message is vacuous nonsense.

edit on second thought I'm probably all wrong on this - I welcome the flamage anyone wants to blast me with :)

Didn't you hear they have removed vocab, spelling and cursive writing from the curriculum??

(sadly it's the truth, they no longer teach cursive where I live:eek:)

My kids used to get so angry with me because I would block their spell check:lol2: Oh well, at least they learned to spell and know witch, which to use.....;)

Holy cow, are you serious?? No cursive?? Coming from an entire family of teachers (as a nurse, I'm the black sheep lol) that is just appalling! I can see my educator ancestors spinning in their graves.... Sheesh! That really bugs me!

If they don't teach cursive writing in school, then how are people supposed to learn how to do it? As I remember, it was a rite of passage that we all looked forward to fourth grade for. Now what can the fourth graders look forward to? Un, Google? Doesn't excite me any.

They teach early keyboarding in kindergarten, then keyboarding in the 3rd grade instead.

Wow, soooo glad my kids' school district still requires cursive in 3rd grade curriculum and that the later grades require it for all writing assignments. Keyboarding in kindergarten?! I didn't take that until high school....

I have had a multitude of discussions about handwriting with my seven year old (she's in second grade). She scores off the charts in all other subjects including scoring at a fourth grade reading level. Every time I talk to her teacher, she says she's doing wonderful in reading, math, spelling, social studies and science. Yet, she has the most atrocious handwriting one has ever laid eyes on. When I tell her about it, she says, "Printing is dumb and a waste of my time." I tried to explain to her that she needs to know how to write so she can communicate all of her wonderful ideas to the rest of the world to which she responds, "They have computers for that. I could just type them up." She goes to computer class once a week where they teach her to type. She hasn't started cursive yet, but needless to say I'm not looking forward to it. It's important, no doubt, I just am not ready to start that daily battle. The worst part is that her teacher doesn't really seem to care. She'll say things like, "She so far ahead in the other subjects. What are you so worried about?" Jeez, maybe about the fact that I can't read anything she writes. Nice.
