I feel like they should change the title of this site to "reasons why my job sucks"

Nurses Relations

Published

People on here need to realize that when you complain on here (and for some that all those individuals do) it really dissuades us new grads from continuing into the profession. First and most obvious question, Does anyone actually like being a Nurse? I mean granted I don't think anyone loves all aspects of their job, but does it seem like a nightmare every day? Secondly, name the best part of your area and your biggest pet peeve.

Sorry had to rant.

Oh, i also don't mind the benefits and the pay. My hospital actually pays very well and time and a half is offered if they are in desprate need to pick up. Can't beat that...

i thought nursting school really glorified nurses to be such amazing people with a rewarding job. But keep in mind, you are paying them. Without you, they have no jobs...they have to glorify nursing. Trust me when i say the majority of them probably HATED their job in the hospital as well. I've gotten to know one of my professors extremley well AFTER nursing school. During nursing school she made nursing seem like rainbows and butterflys...come to find out, she hates it probably as much as i do. She felt "stuck" in nursing as well but decided to get her masters so she can atleast get off bedside and do something else. She got her masters, got out of the hospital and started teaching. She is a wonderful professor, has been nominated everyones favorite for years and years.

OP I hear what you are saying. I thought that way too and that has made me change my mind on more than a few occassions about switching careers and going into nursing. The fact of the matter is either continue on with my current profession and continue to be unfilled and miserable or do something that will still be stressful (I know several nurses personally so I am not disillusioned by nursing) but at least interesting and varied, and will still pay better with a bachelors degree than with a Masters in my current field. I am not getting any younger (I am 32 and will be about 35 if/when I go to nursing school) so I want to do this now while I still have the desire and energy too...As far as negativity is concerned I actively seek out positive posts and things that apply to my situation, as well as things I may not have know about the field and that has been a tremendous help to me. Nursing, as in life, is something where you have to take the good with the bad. At least when you are a nurse you know to expect a "mixed bag" of things and won't be surprised by some of the things you experience since it was mentioned her already. If its something you really want go for it anyway. Good luck

*** If you choose not to quote a post, and choose not to name the person you are responding to nobody knows who you are talking about. Since you chose not to do either of those it appears you are replying to the OP, who is I believe a new grad so your message don't make a lot of sence.

I made a mistake with my post because I don't always post to this site but now I'm sure I have gotten it right. My original reply was to Ruas61. And if you read my post it should make perfect sense that I am not talking to a new grad nurse. It should be apparent that I am speaking of experienced nurses who have forgotten that they too were once New Grads.

Being a nurse is hard work. Don't get me wrong, you do have a few seconds of laughter while you're eating your lunch standing up.

The irony in this thread is not lost. Essentially, the OP is venting about nurses venting....

Thank you, fellow nurses, for never, ever sugar-coating.

Thank you for every complaint, every rant, every story about terrible administrators, patients, families and co-workers.

Thank you for allowing there to be some sort of counter-balance to "CLICK HERE TO SEE THE TOP 3 BEST-PAYING, COOLEST JOBS WHERE HOT GUYS WILL FEED YOU GRAPES AND RUB YOUR FEET" with nursing invariably being number 1 on every darn one of 'em.

Thank you for teaching me to shut the hell up, toughen my skin and never, ever victimize myself.

Thank you for helping me understand that if my instructor hates me, it isn't license to fail; it is simply preparation for the real world, where I will have to work under and alongside people I may not like.

Thank you for providing insight into a profession where the struggle isn't just with patient illness, but families, policies, liability, administrators, ignorance and ambivalence.

Thank you for telling me that I am not a special snowflake, and a preceptor is required to give me nothing but instruction and feedback, everything else is a bonus.

Thank you for changing my ideas on the nature and benefit of criticism. I am no longer hurt or intimidated by criticism, and welcome it as an opportunity to improve

Thank you VERY much for preparing me that my feet will hurt, that there are some smells I will never get used to (but can learn to deal with), that I will never be too good or too educated to wipe a butt, that growing complacent is dangerous, and that it is perfectly acceptable to cry.

Thank you for educating me on how as a student nurse and a new grad, my presence is not heralded as the second coming of Christ. I don't know where anything is, I don't know who the patients are, no one gets paid for helping me, workload often INCREASES for the people around me, I could very easily make a mistake, and find relief in the fact that people will be honest with me and keep me on my toes.

Thank you for being the kind of site and the kind of user base that you are, even if some people can't grasp why you are beneficial.

Could somebody please make this post into a stickie and post it on the First Year of Practice forum?

I don't get what the problem is. The things we are "venting " about are reality. Why should a new grad be upset by what is really happening and what they are in for?.I mean, would you rather figure it out your self? Sometimes it's just hard to endure this crap and not say anything ie:"vent" .

Sorry if you don't like hearing the truth.

Is that why some nurses lose the love of the job

Good Lord... new grads some of us are very relieved and happy to see you, your smiling faces, your desire to see things done right, and your appetite for knowledge. :(

one of the reasons you see so much negativity on here is that it is difficult to FIND a good place to vent. The fact that this is anonymous and others can relate is PRICELESS.

But I am sorry for some of the responses you are getting. :( boy some of these people are downright cold and forget that they were new once!!! :sarcastic:

I really need all of you negative nurses to start being more positive and supportive.

As an experienced nurse I find it all too depressing and it makes me very sad.

It's all about me.

Really.

That's the point tewdles, it's NOT all about me, so my responses don't need to add to the problem. The OP has a legitimate concern, for her! The responses don't need to be so sarcastic and cold, do they?

To the OP- I am a new grad and I have moments where I feel like I'm "living the dream" and then moments when I question my decision to be a nurse all together...and nursing was my dream job. It is a job that comes with a lot of stress so you can't blame those who need to vent. Something I know now is that you don't really know what you are in for until you are in it. When I first started in the ER I would get frustrated at other nurses for getting irritated over certain types of patients but now I understand that there are things that will become frustrating and at times it seems that you are so completely unappreciated when you know you just worked your butt off. When I'm questioning my career choice I try to remember WHY I wanted to be a nurse and it usually gets me through the moment. Good luck to you....Best part: when you know you have done your best at helping someone and you are appreciated regardless of the outcome. Pet peeve: when unappreciative patients think you are their waitress when you are comepletely slammed with patients who actually need you for their life threatening situation.
