I always screw up when dealing with doctors!

So yesterday I paged the MD cuz my pt's B/p was low (even after he ordered a bolus) and when i was giving him report I was like so at 18 b/p on the right arm was this and on the left arm was this at 18:30 on the right arm was this and on the left arm was this at 19...... And after I was done he goes like "so for the next time, just to make your life easier, take it only in one arm, it's enough" hahah

I work in OB, and after a woman had a lady partsl delivery, she had a perineal tear that needed a repair. The doc had to give her some lidocaine to numb her up, and as he's standing between her spread legs, about to inject her with the syringe of lidocaine, I said "Okay, you're going to feel a little prick." He gave me a sideways glance with one eyebrow raised and later when we were out of earshot of the patient, he said "A *little* prick?" (we were friends)

When I was a new nurse we helped the residents put in subclavian lines; when they were all done we had special waterproof tape (this was before Tegaderm, etc) to cover the site. It came in 1/2 inch and 1 inch widths. We preferred the wider ones, but you could layer lots of narrow ones for the same coverage. I was tearing tape strips for the resident and I thought I heard him say "Shorter," so I gave him a shorter piece next. After three more he looked at me quizzically and asked me why I was giving him such tiny pieces-- he had been mumbling, "not so short."

Hahaha! Hilarious!

My charge nurse was trying to give me a hard time about something (we were joking)and I turned around walking away and said rather loudly "Don't start-I don't want to hear it!" I didn't realize the dr was right in front of me when I turned around and said that so he thought I was talking to him!! I explained I had been joking with someone and thankfully he started laughing and said he had gotten 3 different calls to come down to our floor so he didn't want to hear it either!

Mmm...Not too long ago, I got a fresh post-op from OR. It was a middle-aged man who had had some areas excised from his member. I lifted the blanket to check the dressing for my pacu documentation and...could not find a dressing anywhere. I mean it couldn't be far right. So, I thought. The doc came in to give me a script for him and to speak to him and I asked about the dressing. I told him, I just could not see it. He raised one brow and sorta smirked and told me to look again. Yup. Coban that matched the skin exactly. I was looking for the xeroform, kerlex, & medipore tape (white) the OR nurse had mistakenly told me to look for. The Doc stopped by later "to make sure I found what I was looking for".

Ohhh that totally made me laugh. It sounds like he had a sense of humor about it. Giggle

Back in the mid-90s I worked with an old-school (for that time) RN, who was also a Baptist minister's wife. She was an excellent nurse, and always very kind to everyone. The only thing--she absolutely refused to have anything to do with a member. She would refuse to cath a male, check surgical sites around a member, give a bedpan to a male, or even hand a urinal to a male who could do the rest himself. She would always get other nurses to do her male caths, and get the orderly we had on on nights to do the rest. Plus, when things got hectic, she could be more than a bit addled.

Once there was a 30-something man on the floor, who for some reason I can't remember, had come in for a circumcision. He was her patient. He was having problems with post-op swelling, so she kept the orderly, an older gentleman named Hubert, checking on him and applying ice. At one point, she had picked up the phone in the nurse's station to page Dr. Smith, the house doc for another matter. She punched in the numbers to do an overhead page, said, "Dr. Smith..." and saw Hubert walking towards her. She turned away from the phone and called to Hubert, "Is that man's member still swollen?" However, she turned back to the telephone receiver too soon, and what went out over the intercom was, "Dr. Smith....'s member still swollen?"

Elderly Dr. Smith was a few steps behind Hubert, coming up the hall. He stopped, looked down at himself, and said, "Not in years, thank God!"

I worked with this new nurse in the ED....one day it was her first day in the Trauma room alone (wel lnot really alone but she was in charge) We had a trauma come in that was serious....but not critical and was going to be transferred to town.

The trauma surgeon was in the room and they were inserting lines. She finally got frustrated that came out of the room very angry and wanted the surgeon removed from the room. When I asked her why she stated "He is making inappropriate sexual advance to me in the room" I was shocked...this was our best doc. I asked her what was he doing and she responded with indignant rage and said...."He keeps asking me for COITUS!" The ED doc came storming out of the room because she walked out on him....

I spit my soda through my nose when I realized that the trauma surgeon kept saying he needed a Cordis (a brand name for the large IV/line insertion catheter) and the new nurse thought he was saying he needed coitus (sex). When I explained the difference and which one the MD wanted...... and the MD understood what the misunderstanding was.....we all had a good laugh.

I will never forget the look of righteous indignation of that nurse when she though the MD wanted sex....:roflmao:....and the look of the MD's face when he realized why she was upset.
