Duke New Grad / SNIP 2013

U.S.A. North Carolina

Published

Hi everyone. I haven't found a thread for this topic yet, so I decided to start one. Who else submitted their application on Feb 1st for the various new grad positions at Duke?

Specializes in orthopedic/trauma, Informatics, diabetes.
What is the difference in the SNIPES program and GEMS

SNIPS is "specialized nursing internship program" which means you learn a specialty in Nursing. the GEMS program (I can't remember what it stands for) it is a shorter program and you spend 3-4 weeks in a unit and they place you in the one they think you might fit best. I like the SNIP b/c I knew I wanted ortho. they do it for other specialties, too. Friends that went through GEMS loved it. One is in ICU and the other in ED.

Ok, thank you for clearing that up. Those are the two GEMS positions I applied for. Do you know how many new grads they accept? I would absolutely LOVE to start my career in a new grad program like this... I'm from Chattanooga and we are flooded with nurses, 5 nursing programs in the Chattanooga area and its hard to find what you're looking for. you almost have to take the first thing you're offered bc it may be your only chance to get a job. I just don't want to get stuck nursing on a floor I'm not crazy about, I want to love going to work everyday!! :) for those of you that are graduated and working, any tips?? For job searching, NCLEX, continuing education ect..

I don't know how many they take, there were 6 ortho SNIPS alone hired. Keep looking at the end of the month for new grad/clinical nurse 1 positions. There was about 50-60 nurses in my general orientation. Another friend just got hired at Duke-Raleigh for ortho.

My first job was rehab and I didn't want LTC or Ortho particularly b/c I have had so much ortho work done on myself. Turns out it was the best thing ever!!!! Have an open mind and you may be surprised what you find you like. I thought I wanted NICU or PEDs. Nope. Hated it in clinical. When babies crash, they crash fast and it is heartbreaking.

Good Luck!!!!!!!

Has anyone that applied around 2/28 heard anything? I applied around then for the SNIPES program at University Hospital and am still waiting. I know everyone said 2 weeks from application so I'm starting to check my email all the time!

I also applied on 2/28, haven't heard a peep from Duke. I'm so anxious!

I applied for GEMS on 3/8. I haven't heard anything and am anxious as well! I'm sure they have a ton of applications that they are reviewing though! Deadline for the GEMS program I applied was yesterday. So, I'm sure the ball will begin to roll soon.

Have you gone to your profile page to see the status of your app? It will tell you if it has been forwarded to HR or hiring managers

I did earlier today and all apps said they were received by HR. I happened to check half an hour ago and 1 app has now changed to "under recruitment review". Some progress!

My app that I submitted 2/28 now says forwarded to hiring manager! They are probably working through those ones followed by the ones that closed last night. Good luck to everyone!

Hofamb, did you apply to GEMS or SNIPES?

Specializes in Emergency.

I applied to a CNI position on 2/16 that says forwarded to hiring manager. SNIP position on 2/25 still says just received by HR. The last batch of apps that had the deadline of yesterday, 2 of the say under recruitment review, received on the other 2. They are GEMs positions.

The one that was forwarded was SNIPES. I also applied to the GEMS program that closed yesterday. That one still says received by hr.
