starting to get frustrated/discouraged

U.S.A. New York

I've been looking for a job for almost an entire month, and nothing. I got one interview, which was the same time as my orientation for school so they told me that was my only chance. I haven't gotten any other call backs. I must have filled out hundreds and hundreds of applications at this point and I am starting to think about just doing anything at this point, waitressing, Idk. I have a bachelor's in another field, but an associates in nursing and finishing a bachelor's this year. If I knew it was going to be like this, I would not have worked so hard to get through school.

U only been applying for a month! This is NYC and it takes new grads months, yes months plural to get hired. I went to an excellent BSN program and the quickest anyone was hired was 3 months after NCLEX. So keep applying! If u want a job quick then I suggest don't look in any city. Instead look in a rural area in upstate NY or in less popular states. There you will get calls quick. I heard of NYC new grads getting hired fast when applying to rural small town hospitals in PA. Geisinger is one health system in PA that I hear is quite friendly to new grads. So look upstate or out of state if u wan a job fast. However if u only want NYC area then be patient and keep at it. It's only been one month! Also new grad postings are looked at last by recruiters so whatever u sent application for 3 weeks ago likely won't be looked at til Sept or Oct. It is what it is nowadays...no hospital is jumping up to grab new grads.

I've been applying for 3 months and I got one interview but haven't heard anything definite from them yet. Yes, the job market is incredibly difficult and I share your frustrations. Just keep applying and maybe get a part time job if you want while you are actively searching for RN job.

I know how you feel. in fact, there's likely a thousand new grads in NYC waiting for positions to open. my advice for you is to network with those in the medical field. sometimes you don't expect who can pass your resume along. second, give yourself an open mind to other areas where nurses are needed, such as clinics, nursing homes.. finally, if you really want to stay within the five boroughs, you need to be patient and let things happen naturally.

good luck!

oh one more thing: try to just finish your BSN, once you have that in your hand I'm certain you'll be getting callbacks for interviews. there are so many new grads holding a BSN right now and having trouble.. so an ADN will likely not even put you in the competition for a position.

don't be too hard on yourself.

thanks, I will only take a year to finish my bachelor's because I have bachelor's in another field so I am going to keep trying. I have emailed offices and looked at nursing homes but even those want experience. I'm waiting for my NJ license right now as well.

Become a cna and you will get it

Ive been applying to jobs in NYC for 3 months with a BSN and two years of telemetry experience. Ive had two interviews and still haven't heard back so be patient im sure you'll find something.

G-sxrsweetie22, it 's too late for the OP to be CNA. She is already licensed as an RN. No hospital will hire an RN for a CNA position...due to liability as well as retention issues. Being a CNA while in nurse school would work but not once you are licensed RN.

TelemetryRN, have you tried agencies? with two years of experience they will help you get a job quickly. You can also attend career fairs and open houses. Theres one in a few weeks at Resorts Casino in Queens...sponsored by Nurse.com. Hospitals are looking for experienced RNs with 2years of experience. Meeting the recruiters face to face should work for you.

New grads on these thread, it takes months to be hired as new RN. Also new grad applications are not looked at right away...they may not be seen til two months from now. So be patient as well as open to RN jobs in alternative settings.

Have you looked into CT?

estrellaCR, I actually haven't tried agencies or career fairs, thanks I'll look into that.

The NYC DOHMH is hiring for school nurses and they do hire ADN nurses in the position of Junior Public Health Nurse. Check out the job postings on their site. Please do not get discouraged. I had a lot of doors closed in my face as well. Don't give up. I applied to jobs daily and I'm finally starting to see opportunities roll in slowly. Good luck.
