Pre-Nursing Help /: From BMCC to CUNY Hunter

U.S.A. New York

Published

I started going to Borough of Manhattan CC last fall semester and this will be my last semester before I transfer to Hunter.

My grades are as follows -

MAT104: C+

CHE121: B

ENG101: A

SPE100: A

PSY100: A

ENG201: A

PSY240: A

HED100: A

CHE122: B

BIO425: C- or D :(((((

I was not sure if Hunter was gonna accept me so I didn't take their pre-reqs of Stats and a History class. I also understand they don't offer Dosage calculations math (MAT104) so will that grade transfer over and be a factor in my GPA? Also can I retake/repeat Anatomy and Physiology I (BIO425) there? In summer I plan on taking BIO 426 as there are no more spaces in summer BIO 425. I feel so stupid and I've been panicking for weeks also thinking of a backup. When can I even apply for Hunter's nursing program? I still have to take those pre-reqs and I don't even know what to do for Spring 2015.

I'm not sure Hunter allows any retakes in the pre-requisites for the nursing program, but you should definitely call the Nursing Department office and ask!

Isn't Anatomy/Physiology I a non-pre req? I thought it was a class you take after you've been accepted. :( I've emailed the one in charge (the email left on the Hunter Bellevue School of Nursing page)

Anatomy and Physiology is not a prerequisite anymore.

do you think I should still retake it or move on and do my best?

I ended up getting a C.

Take the C and move on don't waste time trying to better your grade unless the program is very competitive and the C won't get you in and the A will.

I'm not sure yet.

And yes, the program IS competitive.

Even if I retook it, I would retake it after I take A&P 2

Such a coincidence that you're from BMCC, I took A&P 1 there this semester and I'm taking the second one in the summer. My advice is to take it only if you are 100% sure you'll get an A. I think you would have better chances for the program that way, a nurse needs to know her anatomy.

I think I will, but probably in Hunter. Have to really bring my GPA up. It's not hopeless, but it could help. Taking A&P 2 in BMCC this summer as well.

Admission to the nursing program at Hunter is very competitive!

I used to tutor science at BMCC and attended Hunter a Masters degree in Science Education.

Do not take any further science classes until you resolve the reasons for your academic deficiency. Science classes at Hunter are not for the faint of heart. They are tough. The professors expect you to have strong study skills. They don't teach, they lecture. You must teach yourself. BMCC being open admissions, the professors are more used to students with weaker education backgrounds which helps. Besides if you take at BMCC you get to use your old textbook, lecture notes and lab reports. A grade less than a B- in science is cause for alarm. You must analyze and fix this issue or else you will not be successful completing a nursing program.

I personally would retake it and ensure that I got a A (when you retake courses, nothing less than an A is acceptable, IMO). Also, make sure you apply to more than one school to ensure that you are able to fulfill your dream of becoming a nurse. Don't put all of your hope in Hunter, just in case things don't work out. It's always best to have more options and backup plans.
