Im a patient care tech @ UPMC (pittsburgh) moving to NYC in 2 weeks. Have applied to some hospitals like sinai, NYP, beth israel, etc. just wondering if there are any openings in your unit for nursing assistants/patient care techs etc. and how do I go about applying. Also, how much do they make in NYC? I'm making $10.84 which is crap.

thanks,

adam

I asked one of the CNAs at Memorial Sloan Kettering how much they make and they ballparked it at 30/hr. I took her at her word. 10.84 might be crap where you live but it's above average in my area. I was a nurse aide before I became a nurse and I made about 11/hr. Cost of living is astronomical in NYC. Budget carefully, go green and learn to eat less/no meat, ride a bicycle and take public transportation. I say this because I spent a month with my mom in the hospital and at home and saved a lot of money that way.

I would love to sign up at that hospital, as a LPN, I don't make that much. Where I work in NYC the CNA's make $15-17 per hour.

Live in NYC and have worked as a NA and am here to tell you that 30K per year is poverty wages as far as NYC is concerned. Indeed 50K is not that much better, but if one is single and or lives very carefully, it can be done.

Just to give you an idea of wages in relation to cost of living, a small studio apartment in most parts of NYC will run about $1300 or more a month. Bronx, parts of Harlem, Queens and Staten Island will be near the lower end, while anything in Manhattan below 96th Street will be higher, often much higher.

Have seen NA's from the nursing home up the street from me, out at night going through bin liners for empty cans for the deposit money. Mind you live in a very high income part of Manhattan, though not sure what wages the nursing home pays.

You can check NYC Health and Hospitals website to see if they have listings posted for City hospitals. Check also with the Visiting Nurse Serivce of NY, as they do lots of placements for home care.

I said that myself when I went there to do a makeup clinical while my mother was a patient there. If it wasn't for them, I would have flunked nursing school. They do not hire LPNs though. I was told they retrain LPNs as surgical techs which I wouldn't mind because some the surgery at MSK is truly amazing surgery.

So 14-17/hour? That sounds good. So i moved to sunset park, brooklyn and am sharing a small livingroom-less 2BR with a roomate. We pay $450 each. not bad at all. So now I applied at a whole bunhc of hospitals for PCT/PCA jobs and wondering how much they make?

Also wondering if it's worth the time getting CNA training? The dept labor's workforce1 has training vouchers to pay for the training. If they pay more I'll do it, but i think its stupid to re-learn what i already know. I also heard of agencies that help RN/LPN/CNAs find jobs. do they generally pay more?

and i also got an interview coming up for "direct care worker working with mentally disabled people" at $10.90/hour. like HHA except the residents are mentally disabled. i goto go to their homes though (ew)

Try 1199, it's a union. Hospitals, Nursing Homes. It may take a while but usually when they call you they have positions available for you.
