North Shore Operating Room Fellowship-January 2015

U.S.A. New York

Hey all!

Recently north shore put up an application for their operating room fellowship to start in January. Am I the only one who didn't know they had one for the OR or is this a new thing? Anyway I managed to get lucky enough to get an interview for this coming Monday and I'm nervous as hell! I'm a BSN new grad so this is pretty much my first real interview since graduating In May. I had a phone interview with North Shore before which of course went horribly and I was hoping to get some pointers from ppls about interviewing. Hopefully if anyone else got an interview or applied this can also be an outlet to vent about the process (good or bad lol). Anyway hopefully all goes well. I would really appreciate any advice or insight! :)

I just applied this morning. :)

May i know when did you apply?

Did you apply online? :) good luck on your interview!

Congrats and good luck with your interview. I applied today as well and I'm hoping for the best.

Thanks for the well wishes! I applied on Sunday if I'm not mistaken and they called me yesterday. I didn't expect to even hear back because I know their fellowships are pretty competitive. I'm hoping for the best and good luck to you all too!

If I may ask are you all new grads or experienced nurses?

Thanks. I am a new grad.

ok cool at least I'm not the only one haha.

Congrats! Let us know how it goes. I cant give much input as I applied to a fellowship last month but heard back nothing. I am a BSN with 2 years hospital experience but not in OR or critical care. I have been having very difficult time with changing hospitals/units ...having experience is a lie, hospitals say when you are a new grad , apply again when you have experience but once i have experience is same thing..."we decided to go with other candidates". So frustrating. I hear new grads getting hired with less difficulty than i have and despite having two interviews at other hospitals and interviews going well, i get the "well you dont have exact experience in our department" but they hire zero experience people all the time. Nothing against new grads as I was one myself before...i just think they should give transfers a chance also.

I interviewed for their ED fellowship in the summer (didn't go so well as it was my first interview). Look up practice behavioral questions and try to use a story to show examples instead of just straight answering. Like if they ask about your strengths think of story that shows how compassionate you are or whatever. If you still have any careplans from school assignments, review them so you can give details of what interventions you did. I remember the recruiter asked me to do a verbal head to toe assessment, and some random scenario questions. Make sure you can answer why you want to do OR. Good luck!

Thanks for the advice and insight! I'm sorry things didn't go in your favor for the fellowship. I will definitely do some preparation for it. I knew North Shore would be intense for their interviews! It's good to have the heads up but its even more nerve-wracking now lol.

I'm sorry things haven't been working out for you. You would think that since you have experience it would be somewhat easier for you but I guess not. I definitely can relate though because I've been looking for a job for awhile now, I don't know if it's as long as you have, but I definitely get the struggle. It's not easy but all we can really do is be persistent and positive and hopefully things will start looking up (as cliché as that may sound haha).
