Is this even legal??

U.S.A. New York

2 weeks ago I got an acceptance letter saying I was accepted in The RN Pathway Program at Hunter, then I get in email today that this was an error, but I'm accepted into the regular school of art's and sciences (which I obviously didn't even apply to). Is this even legal? I'm reminded of the movie Admissions, where the is mistakenly accepted and the dean says they can't take back an acceptance. I know a similar thing happened at Vassar recently but that was over a span of 3 hours, the students were informed within a few hours. How is it that it took an entire 2 weeks to realize this mistake. In the mean time, I applied for housing and mailed a $100.00 check to save my spot. This seems weird to me, not to mention the dissapointment. Any ideas about the legal ramifications here?

I would consult an attorney. We can't offer legal advice here.

I was accepted to my university with a nutrition major. I wasn't planning to go there at all until I saw the unbeatable financial package...I called admission office and got my major changed to nursing. The lady was blah blah blah how to hard to get in and I basically told her that if I don't get into the program...I just won't go to that college...simple as that. They called me back within a few days that I got into the program over the phone and send me the acceptance letter. That was just my personal experience. Yes, if I were in your situation, I will call the dean of the college and tell him/her about your situation because that that is just simply wrong....they owe you an explanation seriously...

I called the admissions woman that sent me the email and she was just apologetic but didn't really offer any acceptance other than now I'm accepted into the school of arts and sciences which I didn't even apply for, not do I need with an RN and bachelor's in another field. I did some research though and as I suspected it is illegal to rescind an acceptance after someone has already accepted an offer so I emailed the dean admission officer. Hopefully, it will pan out into something, but if I don't get an answer I will try calling. Thank you very much!

@blondie1887 Keep us posted!! That's crazy!! I hope things work out in your favor.

I take it they contacted you after you submitted you deposit. If so this is wrong. An apology just won't cut it! You might have made some serious decisions based on this acceptance like quitting your job, signing a lease or declining an acceptance from another school. A day or too I can understand but two weeks no way. They have to honor it. Defiantly contact a lawyer.

Yea, it was. I sent in the deposit 2 days after I received the acceptance and didn't get contacted until a week and a half later after that. At this point, they even cashed the check. Then, they said they were accepting me into the school of arts and sciences, congratulation and sent me another acceptance email. I didn't apply for the main school and I already have a Bachelor's in another field. I emailed the dean and admission's officer and the dean is going to look into they said, but the admission's woman gave me some malarky about how it happened to a few other people, which makes no sense because I don't see any article about it or mention of it. There were other school this occurred at where it was many students, but the schools caught it within an hour to 3 hours and no one had yet sent in any acceptance of the offers at that point so it was no yet a legal contract. Thanks, I am crossing my fingers for a good outcome!

I wish I was even somewhat surprized, but my time at Hunter was full of administrative errors that I had to fight, and keep fighting, some for years. I'm sorry this happened to you --don't let up, and get the names of everyone you speak with. Escalate this to the top.

They are going to accept me:) my nursing gpa met the minimum requirement (it was my bachelors that didn't) so they decided not to penalize me for finishing a degree that wasnt even required for the program I applied to. The actual nursing school administration was very apologetic and helpful, but the admissions officer never bothered to answer me email or apologize for her mistake. I guess academia allows for these errors. Anyways, I'm glad things worked out!!

I'm glad things worked out. I graduated from Hunter. Non nursing though.

@blondie1887 YAYYYYYYYY!!!!! Congrats!!!!!

That's very interesting that this happened to you because I had a similar experience. I was actually denied to the RN pathway program at first and then later accepted because of an error. I had to go to an admissions counselor in person for them to acknowledge the mistake. Essentially, I was accepted shortly after going in to the school to speak to someone. I have to admit that this wasn't the best first impression of my first experience with the school, however, I have stilled opted to accept my acceptance. Now to get to the real reason I am writing...lol. I am very interested in your experience as student in the RN pathway program. I'm especially nervous about the curriculum and it's level of difficulty particularly with having to juggle working as a newly graduated RN. I have heard from other nursing students that achieving the BS is no where near as hard as when you are going for the AAS. I'm interested in hearing your opinion on how it compares. Are the classes easy to pass? How much non-lecture time do you have to invest (i.e. Clinical) ? Anything worth sharing please do....I would really appreciate it thanks
