Anyone else going to the Nursing Career Fair at Jacob Javits on 10/21?

U.S.A. New York

Hi all,

I hope all of you are well. Are you going to the Jacob Javits career fair on 10/21? I've never been to one before, so if you have gone to one before please share your experience. How did you organize your day? Did you get your RN job this way? Do I need a cover letter with all the resumes? Thanks so much!

Sincerely,

-Jobless

WASTE OF TIME FOR NEW GRAD. POSSIBLY if you have a bachelors there may be a glimmer of hope.

I'm so sorry to hear that. Have you ever gone to one? I do have a BSN but what did they say to you to take away your glimmer of hope? I know there's a lot of BSNs who have trouble finding jobs as well...

I still want to go. The worst that can happen is I get another rejection to add to the pile but at least I tried, I guess...

Hi Jobless!

I'm also a jobless new grad BSN, and I might go to the career fair this week. I've been to one before that a little bit on the smaller scale, and a quasi waste of time, but what the heck, right? I left after an hour at the last job fair because most of the tables did tell me they weren't hiring new grads at the time.

I did get one interview with a shady company from the career fair, though. Even though the interview was also shady as well.

Do you think its time to change our careers?!?!? :(

Hi MW,

No, I'm sticking with nursing lol. I worked too hard for this and I love taking care of people, but I am getting more broke by the minute and I might go on welfare. I'm excited to go and like I said before, what's the worse that can happen...getting turned down? Haha, it's not like I'm not used to it by now. I think there's another career fair in Flushing also and it's going to be in November. I think going to these career fairs can be good in that you can put a face to your resume and maybe the recruiters will recognize your name when you apply with their hospital/organization.

MW, how many resumes did you bring? How did you dress? What questions did they ask you? I've never been to one...

Thanks!

I was just kidding about quitting nursing! Haha :) What kind of nursing do you want to get into? Where have you been applying?

Yeah, there is another career fair in Flushing in November which I believe is at Citi Field? I wore my suit to the career fair I went to this past summer, and I brought maybe 30 copies of my resume with me, I think? It was a smaller scale career fair (not as big as the one this week), so I didn't bring as many copies of my resume with me.

The recruiters there weren't very nice and friendly, and they didn't really ask me too many questions once they found out I was a new grad. It as just like, "Sorry, we don't have any open positions for new grads", and then they turned their attention away from you. There were a lot of new grads there, too- more than the experienced RN, and I got the feeling they were really just looking to talk with RNs that had experience.

Even experienced nurses cannot find jobs. If you know someone high up in the ranks somewhere I would use them! If you have a BSN your chances of getting a job are higher than mine. I have an associated degree from NCC and very few of us graduated have been able to land positions. I did gain a job at a LTC facility but they do not have sufficient training. Go to the fair! Maybe I will see you guys there! Do not take anything to heart. I am also an actress and rejection is my middle name. You just laugh it off because one day you girls will be nurse managers denying the same people that denied you jobs! :yeah:

I'm not selective at all. I just want to work! Lol. I've been looking in NJ and nada. It's like "new grad" means Ebola virus. Thanks for the advice!

Yeah this situation really stinks. Good luck to you, too!

I'm so glad someone asked about this. I have been feeling super nervous about going this week, and everyone keeps telling me not to get my hopes up to high about the fair. But how can I help it when I feel like everything else I have been trying has been fruitless to this point? I was curious about how many resumes to actually bring. I actually have an AAS in nursing, but I do have a Bachelors in Psych. Hopefully I won't automatically get my resume tossed in the trash.:(

I am also going and it is my first time going there....I mean im sure they will want experience:uhoh3: but there is no harm in trying...u never know...I wish the best of luck to all of u !!

I'll save u the time and gas money

Youre going to wear something business casual, print your resume on fancy paper

Go there

The recruiters are going to say "we;re not collecting resumes, you have to fill out an application online. Heres a postcard with instructions on how to"

South nassau, gave you the flyer for the online application process...and was gracious enough to allow us to write our name on a sheet of paper. All 3200 of us. Theyre not even hiring internally right now.

Its good if you want a job outside of nursing. Sure then go.

Even nursing homes arent looking for nurses, they are looking for aides.
