ANY JOB UPSTATE NY?

  1. 0 I'm a new BSN RN and I have been trying real hard to get a job both upstate and in the city. I currently live in Ulster county but im willing to relocate for a full time poition. Does anyone know of a medical facility that is willing to hire a new RN? I am not too picky with salary, i just need to get the 1 year experience out of the way.

You don't want to move to LI? I usually hear them saying they are always hiring

I'm from LI and while they are hiring, they seem to me, to only be hiring certain people and those with good referrals/connections.

I tried so hard out here on LI and I didn't get anywhere.

I just got hired at Bassett Medical Center in Otsego county. Try there, and it shouldn't be too drastic of a move for you because you're in Ulster for me it's kind of nerve wracking but I have no choice.

Also, I tried countless times Albany and Suny Upstate but I didn't hear back from them.

What I'm noticing bottom line is those with good connections and know people are getting in 80-90 %, or if they're internal employees it really helps.

I even tried volunteering that would have worked but there were no open positions at the time. I tried the wrong hosp I should have volunteered in those with high turnover.

    All the best...

Hey! Did you ever consider Buffalo, NY? The hospitals there seem to hire a lot. Also the rent is hella cheap compared to most places. I am from NJ originally and currently live in Buffalo. I will be moving back to NJ next year, however, to care for my dad who's been recently diagnosed with early stages of Alzheimer's.

Erie County Medical Center is an excellent hospital in Buffalo & I did my clinicals there as well. LOVED the staff and envireonment! www.ecmc.edu

    Good luck to you!!

    Hey Bjorklover,

Hows it going at Bassett? I've been trying since September in NJ and the city with no luck. I was offered an interview there back in August but turned it down to try and find something here, but with no luck I applied again and fortunately they invited me back for a couple of interviews. How has it been adjusting to life there? How is the hospital? The pay? the people? Would you say its worth going over there for the year to try and get the experience out of the way? Any feedback would help a lot!!!

It's going good! Go don't wait! Life is quiet, it's cold now and snow! I need to get snow tires. Rent can be anywhere from 500-1000 depending on location and stuff. Pay is low, it's not going to be the salary we were to get downstate.
People are cool, nice I experienced no problems.
Yes, come p here get the experience. Then go back down home that's what it looks like 75% of everyone seems to be doing. I would stay 1-2 years. So far I've been here 2 months.

Hospitals in Syracuse, NY are always hiring. Last week they were advertising for new grads.

Thank you so much for this link. I am registered in NY but live in LI. I have to always do SERIOUS research when it comes to upstate. This is excellent!!

Now I just hope that I would be able to get a position.

    Hi bjorklover,

I'm hoping you'll see this - I just signed up for the site, so can't PM you, but have just been offered a new grad job at Bassett, and see that you work there as well. I know you spoke about it above, but I was hoping you could update me on how you still like it, what unit you work on, how much you think you've learned, and last of all, how you found the transition from NYC to the very rural, remote area. I'm strongly considering accepting the position because I absolutely love the unit, manager, and nurses, but it sure would be good to hear from someone else from NYC who made the transition.

Also, how easy was it relocating in terms of finding a place to live, etc? I know the manager said most nurses don't live right there in Cooperstown because it's sort of a ritzy vacation second-home place, but live in the surrounding towns.

Anyway, thank you SO much - I know I've bombarded you with questions, and hope you'll see this! Have a great day....

    All my best,

Hey girl yeah I like it up here. The job is not bad. Up here is ok does get lonely at times. Rent canbe anywhere fro 500-1000. I would definitely come up because you need experience. I don't think I have enough posts to pm either . And I'm on phone right now so I can't seem to figure it out right now

Thanks so much! I really appreciate the fast reply. Maybe I'll see you up there. How did you go about finding a place to live? my default is to only use craigslist and there are places listed there but I'm wondering if there's a more logical way to do it...real estate agency or whatever.

I promise that's my last question - thanks so much again!
