Let's spice it up, MO!

The Missouri board is soooo snoozy!! Let's make it a little more fun and active so I have something to look forward to when my babies are napping!

Tell us where in MO you live, why everyone should come visit your town/city (or shouldn't!), and a little about what area of nursing you're in or plan to be in.

I'll start:

I live in the 'burbs of St. Louis. What I love about St. Louis is the variety of activities, people, and neighborhoods. There's something for everyone, and it's a great place to raise kids. There are lots of great parks, museums (free ones!), a terrific zoo, and fun and funky places to visit, like the Loop, the Hill, South Grand, and the Central West End. I'm a big fan of St. Louis, so if you have any questions, let me know.

As for nursing, if I am accepted, I plan to start at Maryville's WEC BSN program in the fall of '08. I completed all of my prereqs at St. Louis Community College. I put my plans for nursing school on hold for a couple of years because I have two toddlers at home to chase after. I was a Spanish teacher for 6 years, which I loved, but I am thrilled about becoming an RN. Right now, I am thinking I would love to work in the NICU, but I will know more once I start nursing school.

i'm a student at one of the community colleges here in stl. i'm a much older than student than you and my kids are grown. i worked in it for 6+ years after receiving my bachelor's in '99. i knew instantly that cubicle work was not for me!!

i just started my 3rd semester of an adn program and am also thinking nicu!! we have a peds rotation this semester, so i'm hoping to get somemore information during that time.

the best thing about stl besides what you mention above?!?!?

the st. louis cardinals!! go redbirds!!

My dh would be horrified if he knew I forgot to mention the Cardinals!! He's a huge fan.

How do you like SLCC? I was about to go there when I decided to put things on hold. Are you pretty impressed with the teaching? Where are you doing your clinicals? I am so nervous about starting NS (if I get accepted at Maryville), but so excited, too.

I thought of another reason to like St. Louis: you will never get bored by the weather! Super hot, ice storms, tornadoes, you name it.

I am a native St. Louisian (?). I moved away from St. Louis in 95 to Atl and met my dear sweet wife. We moved back to St. Louis in 2000. I began nursing school in 2003 while working full time. I graduated in May from SLCC-FP and passed boards in July.

I am working at Barnes Hospital on a med/surg floor and it is by far the hardest job I have ever had. I believe working med/surg will give me the advantage and experience I need to go any place I want after my first year. I really want to work pediatric critical care/ED. I love the children, adults are just too whiney!

Currently we (Wife, Son, myself) are thinking about moving back to Atl to be closer to her family and so our son can be close to them as well. We really have no family here anymore. I love St. Louis and will always be a Cardinal fan.

congrats on passing the boards and being gainfully employed!! i am a 3rd semester student @ stlcc and can't wait to be done with school and start my real education!!

i understand about moving back to where there is family for their and your son's sakes. my husband and i both lost our parents in recent years, and while we maintained a pretty close relationship across the miles, i know that our kids and their grandparents missed out on a lot by not being close by.

have you checked out the peds/critical care forums on allnurses? i've been checking them out and it appears that a lot of the time they might prefer no adult med/surg experience since children vary so drastically from adults in care. just my .02...

I have applied to Lutheran School of Nursing and Chamberlain College of Nursing. I am awaiting word on acceptance. It sure is hard to wait.

I have both a clerical and health work background. I am also have diploma and am certified in Medical Assisting. Unfort. my job at DePaul Health Center did not work out. I was going thur orientation on Ortho floor, 12 hr nites and I did not like those hr/time at all. Does this mean health/nursing is not for me. I do love pt care though.

Any suggestions.......

I'll play along even though I'm in southern California at the time - however, I think I have the man (now fiance...just got engaged last month!) talked into coming back to the Loo after he retires from the military. ;)

I'm from Festus. It's tough to say if people should or shouldn't visit, but I thought it was cool because it's small and you know pretty much everyone. A trip to Wal-Mart Supercenter was like going to a class reunion! We lived in the rural areas, so I thought it was great that we lived right in the middle of the woods in a really nice subdivision. However, visitors might be a little thrown by the redneck feel to the area. And it's not like we have cool mountains or anything really scenic in the town that would make people think it's a great place to live (especially in the dreary wintertime). But it really was....and the schools are great!

I've been working on a labor and delivery floor since graduation in Dec. '06. It's hard as heck at times, but I have the best group of nurses as co-workers and that makes it so much better.

And I agree that the Cards make St. Louis living even more wonderful! I'm going to have to get the Extra Innings package next season because I don't get too many games on TV out here. But I did go to see them when they came in town to play the Dodgers - wore my red shirt and got booed more times than I can count. :lol2:

Oh, my....I have many Dodger fans in the family/friends network still...one in particular goes to many games and has written me about the "people in red" that he harasses when he goes to Dodger games. He even sent me a message on his PDA from one of the last games he attended about "some girl in red" that he was giving a bad time to, lol!! He's a cop, so wouldn't do anything to scare anyone; he's just lippy, lol. (Unlike some of those Cubby fans -- geeeeesh)

That is too funny! I was a bit surprised because I was definitely not the only Cards fan there - and the poor guys "in red" got harassed WAY more than I did. And wouldn't you know that we lost that game! :o

No, it means that 12 hour nights are not for you. Maybe 8 or 12 hour days are. I personally would love to work nights (if I were already a nurse of course) but my husband's hours and my son's schooling would conflict. Therefor, I would be working days if and when I get a nursing degree. Are days my preference? No. 7p - 7a is but I gotta do what works for me, as do you

They aren't flexible at all with your schedule? I am a tech at another SSM facility and have found them totally willing to work around my school schedule as suits both of us.

Been a while since this thread was started, but I thought I would play too

I am rather new to Missouri. We moved to Rogersville in February 2006 from Northern California. For those that don't know, Rogersville is about 20 minutes east of Springfield. It's a tiny little hole in the wall town, but we have a nice little furniture store and a Dollar General. What more does one need??

I started in nursing as an A.D.N....then right on to my B.S.N....now in my third semester of FNP school. I will be done with my FNP program in December of next year and hope to work either in women's health or neuro. I know...strange choices! I currently work in surgery at a small local hospital in Springfield. When in California, I worked OR and neuro.
