How old are the nurses on your unit? In mine the average age of the nurses in mid 20's I work at a large level one hospital in MICU. What about y'all?!?

Same here - low to mid-20s for most of the week. The weekend group maybe averages 30-35 and up.

Our youngest is 22, our oldest is approaching 70.

Lots of 30~ something's.

For us there is a big difference between night and day crew. The day crew is mostly 40 and up and nights tends to be 20 -30 year olds. I think that largely has to do with the fact that day shifts are given based on seniority. :)

Average nurse age is between mid 30's to late 60's. Just happy to work with the wiser, more mature, and experienced nursing staff to enhance my expertise at bedside, with the family, and on rounds. The nurses that have 'been there-done that' are golden in my book.

I have found that in larger academic centers the staff are on the most part younger. mid 20's. Outside that they are typically older especially the night shift. 30-40's. Then you have dinosaurs like me....;)

I think older/experienced nurses have a lower tolerance to residents. At least that is my feeling....as I got older I had less tolerance for their fresh faced arrogance. :yawn:

But that is just me.

My MICU is mostly 20s, some early 30s. Im 23 myself. Our night shift staff is older than the day shift, like late 30s-early 40s.

I've always heard of night shift staff being younger, and that seems to be the case where I work. Now I'm confused! Most of you see the older nurses on nights?!

It depends! Where the older nurses tend to live at my facility are either weekday days or weekend nights.

Weekday days: These are in high demand because a lot of people have kids and such.

Weekend nights: This is the highest paid shift of all between the weekend differential and the night differential, so a lot of older nurses who care about saving money will work this shift.

Weekend days and weekday nights tend to have younger staff.
