OCC - for Fall 2012 or Jan 2012 prospective students!

Hi everyone! Okay so I decided to make a seperate thread for those of us seeing what our options are because we got the dreaded letter from OCC. It was getting hard to filter out the information pertinent to us in the general OCC thread.

I just want to tell everyone not to give up.

I had a meeting with a counselor yesterday, who basically assured me that any drastic changes made to OCC nursing admission policy could NOT be implemented in the very next admission cycle. He said that he had been a counselor for over 16 years, and the last time they made a drastic change (like from waitlist to gpa based) they grandfathered in everybody who would have been 'caught up' in the transition.

I had a 3.824 gpa. I had three classes that were not straight A's (An A- in both american government and english composition two, as well as the dreaded B in A&P 1). I am retaking all three and am going to seriousely aim for all A's. The gpa cutoff is gonna be a 3.9 something and I don't want to have to worry about not getting in again. I am going to do my best to get all A's.

I met with the counselor to discuss my options and see what to do at this point. I was considering going LPN but I don't think i'm going to do that anymore because my biggest aim is to get my RN as soon as possible. The LPN to RN transition program is only offerred every even year. What this means for us? If I were, for example to start the LPN program in January of 2012, it would be over in like March of 2013. Then I couldn't start the transition program until like July of 2014. Then I wouldn't be done with the transition program and have my RN until December of 2015! This versus the ADN RN program, which would start in the Fall of 2012 and finish in like early May of 2014.

Good luck to all of those still trying! We can't give up!!!!!

Patiently waiting for the letter...Although I heard # of applicants was down this year. Just heard from a friend also applying this cycle that there was around 350 applicants this time around...at the info meeting the counselor said years prior had 5-600 apps. I wonder how or if that will affect the GPA cut off this year....Good luck everyone!

Just wondering...how did your friend find that out? Hopefully that will be really good for all of us with less than a 4.0. Did she/he happen to hear anything about how many 4.0's have applied?

Also, if anyone else is as bored and anxious as I am right now, you might be interested in checking out this book I'm reading while I wait: Nursing Fundementals Demystified by Bennita W. Vaughans. It's really good! It kind of breaks down and gives all of the main points that I think we will learn in Fundementals. I thought it might be a good way to get ahead of the game so that the material isn't completely foreign when we start. :specs:

She said she heard from a counselor at Highland Lakes...She did not say how many 4.0's there were this year. I am applying with a 4.0, I think she is 3.9xx. I still have some nervousness about it though. Like that something might have been missing from my app, etc. I am really bad at listing to my voicemails...I had 21 unheard voicemails then it dawned on my a couple days ago that I could have had a message from HL and I had a major anxiety attack. Turns out I didn't have any messages from them, but I am still going to bite my nails 'til the letter comes. And I'm not even a nail biter lol. I just think a lot of people are looking elsewhere for nursing programs. While I was doing my pre-reqs, I overheard on different occasions quite a few people who were transferring to OUs, WCCC, and schoolcraft because the admissions at OCC are so competitive.

Good lookin' out of the book, I think I'll pick it up too.

I called the nursing department today. I was told that they started mailing out letters yesterday afternoon! I don't know if they mail them all out at once or what, but I didn't get anything in the mail today. I hope it comes tommorrow, and I obviousely hope it is an acceptance letter. OMG OMG OMG. She also told me they had significantly fewer applicants this year, around 400 is what I was told.

good luck!!!

AHHHH! I just want it to be tomorrow at noon so I can check my mailbox! How am I supposed to sleep now?! Plus, I'm in macomb county, I wonder if it will take longer to get to me. Hope not. Glad someone called :) I was wanting to but I thought they might have been inundated with calls and I didn't want some overwhelmed receptionist to snap at me lol

Also, I was on the nursing website today and read that the changes to admissions are set to take place for fall 2014 admissions

Prospective Students

If anyone is interested...

So that means next year is soley GPA based as well. Thought I'd post because I know it comes up pretty often. Hopefully none of us will need to worry about it, but if anyone is curious there it is.

Holy cow!!! Seriously?! Oh, that would be fantastic -- good luck everyone!

Nothing from OCC in my mailbox today. Totally dissapointing.

im waiting too. so stressed i wont make it with a 3.932, but reading there are only 350 applicants makes me feel a little more hopeful. good luck to everyone!!

nothing in the mail yet for me. how many students do they let in?? i'm sorta freaking out. I feel like everyone that has applied has like a 4.0 so even though its a lot less people I think GPA still might go up.

I think they program takes 216 people...I could be off by a few but it's around that. Of those spots there were 40 4.0's last year, or so I read. # of 4.0s has probably gone up...people who didnt get in last year were counseled to retake classes. But there's no way all 4.0s applied, so don't stress :) The number of 4.0s is probably still pretty close to last years #

Omg! My friend got her acceptance letter. She is in! I wish I had my letter. Oh well. By the way, her gpa was a 3.974.

No letter for me yet either... Mine only has like 2 miles to go so hopefully by Monday. :)
