The Guys Club: Guy Students Come on In!

Nursing Students Male Students

Published

Hi All!

I'm a crazy father of 2 ex-premed who just recently turned down Northwestern to go into a RN program.

I already have an Associate in Science, but I'll be getting another ADN and then go to a 4 yr school.

When I went to an info session about the RN program ill be trying to get into, out of like 70 ppl only 5 were guys.

So I want to know are there any men out there?

It's "Raining Men" - Welcome aboard gentlemen!!!

Mare

Was one of 3 males in a class of 90+.

If you just love psych, not to worry, you'll fit right in.

You must feign some interest while the basic "hair-skin-nails-boyfriend" rants are in session. I found that to be difficult because.......I'm balding, clip my nails as soon as I notice they have grown, don't do anything to my skin except use regular soap and it looks good:chuckle , I have never had a boyfriend and have never left my underwear next to the laundry basket:devil:

I left nursing after a semester. It wasn't because I felt unwelcome, I just couldn't get into the psychosocial stuff. As a result of my aforementioned social deficiencies, compounded with my disdain of psychosocial diagnosis, I absolutely did not fit in.

I think a guys club is a great idea though, nursing students most definitely need a male perspective to ponder.

Glad to see a good deal of fathers out there doing this as well.

Suprisingly I'm in computing as well as some of you that are making the career change. I make decent money now.. i just hate it. I want to something a bit more rerwarding that also has room for me to grow educationally.

Specializes in CICu, ICU, med-surg.

Agent-

I'm curious as to what made you change your mind and go into nursing instead of med school. Personally, I looked at med school as an option but was turned off by the high cost and the amount of time it would take to finish. Nursing has been something I've considered for many years and I love the fact that it's so flexible and gives you so many options.

Interested to hear your story...

Okay,

My family made me reconsider. At first I didnt care that my wife was unsupportive of pre-med, but when I started to notice how it was affecting my poor little babies, I felt really bad. I found a nursing program in my area which has evening clinicals and then the decision was pretty easy.

The time, cost and all that didnt scare me at all. I was so prepared to go through with it, but I didnt want to leave my family behind.

Hey guys......I am a nursing student in Houston. Just about to start school for my R.N. and propbably go on to get my Masters for N.P.

Any advice? Is nursing school a bi%*h?

Stay cool.....Matt

OOPS......I meant to type "probably" (not propbably). I swear I'm not that dumb guys!

Welcome! I haven't started yet so I can't say.. I'm sure its easier than med school ;)

Add one more to the group. I will be starting on the 25th. I have wanted to do this for the past 2.5 years and the only thing that has changed is that I am older. Good luck to everyone.

Wow! Lots of computer people changing over to nursing!

(okay, so I'm not a guy! I just couldn't resist reading the thread, though!) :D

I'm a male ADN student also. I will be starting my 4th semester this week, after a tough summer schedule. I actually starting coming here with many questions before I started ADN school last year, and have met some nice, helpful people. I don't have much time to post here, but I do stop by and check on the other students at times. Let me know if I can be of help to you "new" guys and girls. I have been a construction worker for over twenty years, and decided to go back to school a few years ago. Now, I have completed 3 of 5 semesters of ADN schooling, and hopefully by this time next year, I will be a RN. Take care guys...and girls...

darby -- How do you like it so far? Is it way better than construction??

I think a good deal of us are career changers. It be great to hear how you feel.

manna -- hi there bud-dy! ;)
