Hi. Does anyone have any information/opinion on Golden Living Centers formerly known as Beverly Health Care? I've been getting calls from head hunters and one tells me Golden Living is wonderful and the other says it's horrible....

I started off working as a department head for a Beverly facility & survived the change to GoldenLiving and have several friends working at sister GL facilities. Honestly just about the only thing that I have seen changed in this division is the name & colors.

Granted the pay is above average and the benefits package is one of the best available in the area and I am proud to have had the chance to work with some of the most skilled, dedicated and caring Nursing/CNA staff one could possibly ask for any where in the industry.

On the other hand I would not recommend working for the company as a whole due to the poor commitment to the safety and welfare of the staff and residents by the division and corporate level management. The old Beverly Enterprises "cover it up or fire someone to place the blame" (9 ED's, 6 DON's, 14 Charge Nurses & 5 Social Service directors in 22 months and I quit counting CNA's & Staff Development Coordinators after the first 3 months) and "don't fix it if you can hide it" policies are still alive and well which is the main reason for short staffing & poor retention.

The worst drawback I have witnessed is the treatment of injured workers. GoldenLiving like Beverly before it is self insured for workers comp and I have seen staff injured by the lack of proper PPE, working lifts and a few just plain old accidents who have been waiting months to over a year for care they will most likely never receive. The adjuster will swear on a stack of bibles that it will be taken care of but almost never comes through.

As someone said previously, investigate the Golden Living facility you are considering applying at. If it is one of the few good ones then you can have a rewarding and happy career in a great facility. If it is one of the rest just drive on by.

I've worked as an aide several years back and think it was Beverly then..or maybe right before it became Beverly...it was horrible..only reason I didn't quit the day I decided to was because my grandmother was admitted..so I stuck it out so I could make sure she was taken care of..and I've worked for them as Golden Living Center..the place had been spruced up quite a bit. I got hired as a prn nurse on 1st and 2nd, but when i called to ask when i was to come in for orientation was told that the nurse who wasn't going to be able to continue working due to md orders had found a md that would sign for her to keep working...so there was no position for me unless i would take the fulltime opening on 3rd shift,,and against my better judgement i took it..it was a nightmare..and happens that a few weeks later i learned that the one nurse..quit before i finished my first week of orientation..and not a word was said to me by management. I left there after about 5 months..which felt more like 2 years..i gave notice but didn't finish it out..just called in one evening and told them i wouldn't be back..i just couldn't do it any longer..started my new job the next day..and just this past summer i got a recruiting letter from them..so...it kinda looked desperate to me on their part to fill positions...sorry was so long...

I had a family member in there for 24 hours before we took her home and she was only there for rehab. The one we had the displeasure of dealing with was in Louisville Ky on Breckenridge Lane. I have taken my dog to kennels that were nicer. She had hip replacement surgery and they put her in a room with no showering facility, bathtub only. They were going to shower her with a fresh post-op incision in the shower room. When we inquired on whether the shower had been cleaned after the last patient (who was incontinent) was showered, the DON told us the following "There are no state regs that require the shower be cleaned after every patient." If you notice that was in quotes. As a nurse myself I was outraged. The place was filthy with soiled briefs in bags on the floor outside the rooms. My family member was there for 28 hours, no head to toe assessment was done. She still had an I.V. from the hospital in, I know because I took it out myself when we got home. She was never assessed by the physical therapy department, and her window next to her bed was broken so it wouldn't shut. It was stuck 2 inches open in October and she rolled up a towel and put it in the crack. It was the worst experience of my life. I would be scared to work there, I'd be afraid I would lose my license. :nono:

Is anyone familiar with Boston-area Golden Living Centers? I have an interview at one on Monday.

Does anyone know about the management in the facilities? Management is a large part of what makes a facility run smoothly. I have worked at a LTC facility where the management was not very nice. They talked about employees in stand up, would not help floor nurses, etc. I need to know a company treats us little people equal and fair.

I've worked for many companies in many different buildings. You can not generalize about a corporation's management in a specific facility. I worked for one of the biggest health care companies on the planet. Each building had to follow company policies, but each management team had different ideas and different styles. I was lucky to work in one where the director of nursing believed every employee was a valuable member of the team.

There's an active, recent thread - posts today - thread about this company in the MN forum. Didn't sound too golden to me.

We have 2 Golden Livings both about a mile apart from one another. One is fab! Execellent care, the patients are clean and seem happy, the staff seems adequate. The other...we call it Golden Urine. It smells terrible, the patients are dirty and seem neglected. I think a lot of it has to do with the inside mgmt...

Our students did a rotation, I found the staff excellent and they had been at the center for years. They did have an excellent computer system. But what I didn't like was the lack of supplies.

Does anyone know who the main management over GLC are and how to contact them?
