Okay, I'm in the Fundamentals class (mentally drumming my fingers and hoping we get to the good stuff soon...). We start with theory, and I'm reading along and get to Martha Roger's theory of nursing...we are energy fields floating in the universe....

What the *#(@()Q@! is this?! I'm telling you guys, I want to be an RN, but if someone pulls out crystals and starts talking about aligning chakras, I'm outta here.

You just make me LOL.

Just get through the theory and then take care of the patients.

My hospital (Catholic, BTW) actually has a program where they will teach you how to hold your hands above someone's body to realign their energy flows to release pain. The practitioners are consulted for pain management frequently on the floors.

But our insurance won't pay for me to go to a chiropractor for my back which is screwed up from caring for 400-950 lb patients without adequate staffing. Go figure.

Specializes in Vascular Access Nurse.

just wondering why you had to take fundamentals? if you're already an lpn, you should get credit for that! i'm 248 days away from graduation from penn state university, and they gave us lpn's credit by portfolio for nursing 111 and 112 and let us challenge peds and ob! lucky for me, i only had to take the second level nursing classes, since i was successful in my challenge. don't other schools let you do this? you'd think they'd rather spend time teaching fundamentals to newbies......without the incense and bongo drums. :chuckle

rexie,

i was looking on penn state's site for their lpn advancement program and i can not seem to find any info!!!! how many nursing classes did you have to take? were you allowed to test out of some clinicals??

Specializes in ICU, Telemetry.

I actually called the BON to ask why I had to take this again (in any LPN bridge in the state) -- their answer was, "well, we had to do it." I kid you not, you can't make up stuff this stupid...

I don't have to do the clinicals, but I'm sitting there beating my head into the desk every freakin' day...This week, it's "how to write a nurse's note and and beginning nursing diagnosis."

Oh, joy.

I've never heard of the woman or her theory.

Just sounds like another bunch of money making BS to me, like that woman that came up with PBDS.

Specializes in med/surg, telemetry, IV therapy, mgmt.

:chuckle that's why you are in school. . .to become educated. i had to take a whole course about the nursing theorists. they paved the way for what we do as professional nurses today.

do you have a copy of taber's cyclopedic medical dictionary? in the appendix section in the back is "conceptual models and theories of nursing". martha rogers is listed with the conceptual models and it gives you a rundown of her science of unitary human beings. it lists and describes the 4 basic concepts and the 3 principles of homeodynamics. taber's thought it was important enough to include in their dictionary. it is also described as an entry for "rogers, martha" in the mosby's medical, nursing, & allied health dictionary.

this website has limited information and links to nursing theories: http://www.sandiego.edu/academics/nursing/theory/

I'm with Sue---it's just something we all have to endure to get to the good stuff.
