Halfway through the LVN/LPN program and already ready to start applying for RN school

Hello everyone,

I am new here to allnurses.com, but I can tell you now that over the past few days I have enjoyed reading through all of the information you all have to offer.

Here's where I stand:

I am about halfway through my LPN/LVN program at a local vocational college, and I am not willing to stop there.

I just feel as though "if I stop now, I'll never want to get my RN"

I've been a CNA for 4 years, not just in LTC but in Home Health and at a local hospital.

I got my phlebotomy license about 2 years ago and still do a couple jobs here and there.

But mainly I am a Medical assitant at a Local University (yes, a lot of universities have clinics, weird I know; but where else are these party hardy students supossed to go when something goes wrong! haha)

I've always wanted to get my RN, BSN but I was always too scared to just put in my application.

I went to community college and got all of my prereq's out of the way, but jus never felt up to par. So i did the CNA thing, then phlebotomy, then MA.

now alittle less than a year from finishing my LPN/LVN schooling, then taking the NCLEX and I have no other way to but up from there.

and let me tell you "I am scared and excited at the same time!!"

anyone else feel as though if they stop they will get too comfortable and not want to continue?:confused:

I'm taking it one step at a time as well. CNA in 2009, LPN in 2010, I start my LPN-RN program in May and will graduate in 2012. Then I will start my RN-BSN and eventually be a nurse practitioner or midwife.

I feel the same way about moving through the programs, I'm afraid if I stop I won't want to start back. I graduated in December, got my ATT in mid-january a week before the RN app deadline. Took NCLEX the next week and applied. People told my class that we wouldn't get into this class, there just isn't enough time. Well 6 of us got in, I'm glad we didn't let naysayers stop us!!

just the type of inspiration I look for. I want to do the same, I am planning to apply for RN programs towards the end of the LVN program because i have my anatomy, physiology, micro and Chem completed!

there are quite a few nay-sayers on my end as well, but i know it can be done.

That sounds awesome!

Very similar to my plan (which is kind of rough since I'm not sure what i ultimately want to do)

1) CNA in 2009

2) LVN this June (yay!)

3) prerequisites as I work as a LVN

4) then go for PA OR LVN to RN

5) then PA to MD OR RN to NP

I like nursing but I think I want to be a doctor all said and done... :heartbeat

You'll meet negative Nancies all through your school life... No matter what program you're in, CNA - LVN - BSn-Msn-Dns... it doesn't matter, you'll always have people being negative towards your success. It just makes it more fun when you get to smile back and crap on them and tell them "see, told you I could do it"

I am also currently on the same path. I have just been excepted to an LPN school... I start and May YAY! It is also only a year course so I will PRAYERFULLY graduate in April. Then I have a few months in between but hopefully by Jan 12 I will be in an LPN to RN program at a local CC. I am very excited and can not wait for all this to happen and then END. I have been waiting to do this for sometime now but I have also been VERY afraid of taking the next step. But as GOD is my savior I know through him I will make it. Good Luck to all. If you want to be an MD, why waste time and be a nurse? And also, why would you waste time trying to be a PA to ultimately end up being an MD? Why not skip PA, skip nursing, and finish up ALL your pre-req requirements for med school, while volunteering or working with your cna, then get into med school?

If you become a PA , then decide to go through med school to become an MD, thats going to take at least 14 - 16 years, whereas if you go straight for your MD, its about 12.

I didn't know I wanted to be a doctor until this last year of school, But I don't have the money/grades to go straight for medical school. I dropped out of high school but went and got my GED. Also my family is very poor and can't help me. If I can become a MD by unconventional means that actually makes it possible, I'll do so.

There is a PA program I really want to do but requires X amount of hours working under a professional license (CNA doesn't count since its a certificate). So as I work as an LVN and get those house under my belt, I can do prerequisites for the program. And I have been researching PA to MD programs that I would be able to do later when I can afford it..

Besides I might want to stop at PA. I wont know until I get there. =)

But I know I won't be satisfied as a LVN.

You can take out grants and loans for money. That's how mostly everyone else pays for their education, and housing while in school. I must say, although your route is not the most logical, or smartest idea, if you feel that you want to dragggggggggg everything out like that for the experience, then props to you sir.

By the way, I'm doing the LVN - RN - CRNA route, which is more practical then, LVN - RN - PA - MD , or LVN - RN - MD, whereas you can start now after you become an LVN, to getting your med school pre-reqs done.

Don't be so fast to rush off to an MD...When I told my doctor (primary care) that I was in nursing school, he said that he should go to nursing school! Get paid well, lots of great jobs and don't have to deal with the private practice hassle! That's saying something! LOL.

In all seriousness, we all are doing this because we love what we do and we love helping people! Go as far as your heart will lead you! You'll be glad you did!! :) Good luck!

I am currently in LPN school (graduating in July) and in January I started my RN program online (yep, doing both right now!). Let me just tell you - the RN program is NOTHING compared to LPN. If you can survive this, you can do anything!
