Frustrated and Torn

Nursing Students LPN/LVN Students

So I told my in-laws today that I got into nursing school for May 09. I told them that I would have to quit my job in order to go to school full time. Well, they just had a fit. They went on this spill about how the economy is so bad and that nursing homes and hospitals are laying off. I know this is true for some areas of the Country but not so in Middle TN. You can go on just about any hospital website and there are tons of nursing jobs. Nursing jobs are just about the only jobs in the local newspapers here. Even so, they really scared me and have me thinking negatively. I just want to know if you guys think that I would be crazy for quiting a full time reliable job to go to nursing school? This has always been my dream. Why does everyone have to rain on my parade? I've been so excited about this and now I'm torn and really sad.:crying2: Please guys give me your honest feedback.

If this is your dream i say go for it, besides you cant live your life trying to please everyone but if you are trying to please everyone atleast start with pleasing yourself

That is certaintly how I feel right now. I don't want to look back 20 years from now and wonder "what if". This is my dream. I have put it off for years to raise my children. They are 6 and 10 now and they are so excited about the possibility of Mommy becoming a nurse. My husband is totally fine with it and very supportive. He is going to take on more work so that I can quit my job. He knows that this is my dream. A dream that I started at 19 and never finished. Now I'm 31 and I don't feel that I should have to wait any longer. By the time I get out of school in 2010, hopefully the economy will be a lot better.

If this is your dream & in your heart, i think you should go for it. You don't wanna look back and say: I had an opportunity to become a nurse and I just let it slip away. If your family/in-laws really want to help make your dreams come true, they will understand and support you 100%. I wish you the best of luck in the future. Im on the alternate list , waiting to get into the nursing program for january. :nurse:

Hi,

I totally agree that you should go to nursing school. However there is no way I was willing to quit my job to do it. When I added up all the money I would lose by not working it blew my mind and that is money/time you will never get back. If you are a decent student and need to work please don't let that put you off from doing school also.

Congratulations on getting in!

I think it is great that you are pursuing your dream!

I am also quitting a good-paying, stable jon in order to start nursing school. I will work as a CNA prn while in school, and I also clean an office for a little bit of money and I'll rely on student loans for the rest (about $300/month). My mother gives me a hard time about quitting my job, and always asks where I'm going ot get money from. I just tell her it is my business, not hers.

If your husband is behind you, that is all that matters.

Good luck!

Hi Shord,

I think you should do it. Like you said, you've put it off since you were 19. Do it while you're still young and motivated:heartbeat.

I cried when I had to quit my high paying job to go back to school lol. I've realized that the only people that truly understand the decisions and sacrifices we have to make are other nursing students. It's not easy but it's worth it. And working as a CNA is a great choice to gain experience and get into the field.

It's great that you have your husband there to support you and help financially...with that said, I say go for it Girl!

Good luck, and before you know it you'll be a nurse in somebody's hospital making good $$.:D
