Anyone attending Gurnick Academy LVN program??

Nursing Students School Programs

Updated:   Published

Hello,

I am also thinking of attending this school for the lvn program beginning January 2012. I've already met with Ann, the financial aid office and I am "technically" enrolled. However, after reading some of the threads, I must say I am a little discouraged. Can you please share with me some of your experiences you've had with this school? Any advice or feedback would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks

I am just starting the second module at the San Mateo location and I agree with Christine - ignore all the naysayers...they don't even go here! :) I really do love my classes and the instructors here are great. Everyone here treats eachother like family. You guys are right about the school, it is a bit expensive and the $1600 prereq can be hard financially, but honestly its better than waiting 5 yrs on a city college waitlist! By then you will have had a job for a few years and could pay off your loans! :) Give it a shot! Good Luck!

Thanks so much for the advice. I really appreciate it. :)

Has anyone gone to Everest Instutute for their LPN? I am trying to get started in the January 2012 program. Any feedback would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

I am looking at going to Gurnick San Mateo in 2012. I have a meeting with them tomorrow.. I am so happy I found this thread! Thank you

You guys really answered a lot of my questions I'm moving to the bay area from atlanta and I'm very interested in the LVN program there ..:yeah:

Do The Students a Gurnick Talk The NLCEX ? Is the school National Accredited ?

I graduated from Gurnick in May of this year. I passed the NCLEX on my first try with the minimum 85 questions. I don't regret going to Gurnick at all. With EVERY school there are ups and downs. Gurnick is a private for profit school. Their clinical sites in Antioch were simply NOT adequate. The nurses who worked at both of those sites made it clear to many of us students that we were 'getting in their way', etc. etc. Not very encouraging! The clinical site in Concord, however.... AMAZING!! Both the AM and PM clinical instructors there were so helpful, friendly, just awesome people all around. I'm not sure if we are allowed to give the specific name of this facility, but I believe it is the only one in Concord that Gurnick uses.

The instructors Cathy and Joseph are amazing as well. They are nurses who truly enjoy what they do, and enjoy teaching! The job placement department is a joke. I'm sorry, but don't expect them to help you find a job after you graduate. Nursing jobs are extremely difficult to come by currently, but if you are persistent, interview well, and apply widely then you will have the best chance of success.

Gurnick, like I said is a for profit school. Do not expect anyone to hold your hand along the way. We had several students who paid the full amount and did not make it through the program. I don't know how much of their tuition was reimbursed, but it just goes to show that just because you pay what is needed, does not mean that your license will simply be handed to you. I'm not trying to discourage anyone, just trying to spread the message that we all have to work hard for what we want. But we can all do it!

What I feel may help:

BEFORE signing the contract to enroll, make sure you are clear on the type of committment is required in order to succeed. I would not recommend trying to work full time while in the program. But it is doable if need be..

Don't be afraid to ask the instructors what exactly they expect of you in preparation for exams and projects. I loved the projects we were given, and learned so much doing them.

Take what life throws at you, and roll with it! Nursing school is tough, but success is not quite as sweet without obstacles along the way :)

I was wondering how everyone who went to Gurnick is doing now? Did you enjoy the program? Were you able to find a job after and are you now in a bridge program? I'm interested in the Concord campus. But I have a couple questions:

If I take A1 & P1 at my local community college, will I still have to take the prereq course at Gurnick?

Second question is about the schedule. The website states that the classroom times are 9am-2pm and clinicals are from 6:30-3:30. Is that accurate? How many days a week are clinicals? I have kids so I'm trying to figure out if this schedule would work for me. I can definitely do the 9-2, but 6:30am is going to be challenging. Just curious the number of days per week I will need to worry about having a babysitter at 6am!

Lastly, will they ever actually open a bridge program? Any one know?

Thanks!

I know this is an old thread but is there anyway for your tuition to be covered by financial aid and you only pay for $1600 for the prereqs? Also, I have done all my RN pre reqs at a community college; does anyone know if those transfer over?

Hi mrsgoodgame, I am starting the Lvn program at the San mateo campus in July. Where were your clinicals at? Were they local? I live in the east bay and I am terrified about driving in the city. 😢

My experience so far with Gurnick the Modesto campus,I am not yet in the program but I will be signing on the dotted line on Monday. My Gurnick Journey started last year. I took their entrance exam and passed but due to the day classes being full I was told that next year I will be chosen first for the daytime program. Fast forward to this year I called earlier this year to verify that my name was still on the list as first pick I was then told at that time that candidates were chosen by test scores. Fast forward to July I called again to make sure my name was still in the running and I was told that I was selected and to come to the campus to speak with the admission specialist. So after reading all of the threads and reviews I'm not surprised by the inconsistency. Met with the specialist which was informative I was asked to send for my official transcripts for credit granting and was told after that is complete and turned in that I would then meet with the Financial Aid counselor. Week after hand delivering my transcripts hadn't heard from the school. I called the school and they had no record of me if coming in to meet with Admission specialist. I explained that I have an email proving that I spoke with her in person and via email and surprisingly she found that I did meet with her. Again not surprised. I was then told to come this coming Monday to meet with the specialist along with $75 to start the admission process. So the purpose of this is basically to inform all that are considering Gurnick that though they can be disorganized and unprofessional at times sometimes you have to ignore certain things and keep your eyes on the bigger prize! I have tried getting into the RN program for 8years with no luck and this the only way for me in my situation to finally make all of my dreams come true. Stay on top of Gurnick, try and have most of your conversations via email to hold them accountable to the information they give you and stay focused on your goal!

What supplies do we need for pre reqs? I start in January.
