Hello,
I am also thinking of attending this school for the lvn program beginning January 2012. I've already met with Ann, the financial aid office and I am "technically" enrolled. However, after reading some of the threads, I must say I am a little discouraged. Can you please share with me some of your experiences you've had with this school? Any advice or feedback would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks
Christine, yes I seen the "o o o" one for cranial nerves lol! They work for me in emergency field, good for assessments, meds etc., I know I will have to retrain my brain on patient care of the whole body and recovery vs acute medical and trauma. Moan to me was: ms, O2, Asa, nitro for an MI pt. Do you use flashcards? I will probly have 100's of them by the end of the program lol :)
Which campus?
I will be attending the Concord campus! The commute from Antioch is not bad at all. I would have liked to attend the San Mateo or Modesto campus, since their lvn pre-reqs begin this year, but the commute is just out of the question for me. Have you decided which campus you would like to attend yet?

I was going to attend the San Mateo campus because it is closer to me and starts the pre-req next month but I need more time to pay off the cost of the pre-req class so I'll be signing up for the Concord day class too! Yay, we should be in the same class then. Its an hour and a half commute time on BART for me each way but I'll actually like riding and studying instead of driving in traffic everyday. My poor old mini-van could use the break, Lol. I'm going to pm you my email addy so we can keep in touch till our pre-req class starts in January. I look forward to meeting you in class. :)
Christine2009,Are there any other books used in the pre-req class, besides Memmler's The Human Body in Health and Disease, that I should read now?
That is the only one to start with. The drug dose book is good to start as well, but Ann ususally gives you a packet with the first 6 chapters to do before class which will help you once class starts.
I suggested the anatomy book b/c Arti (the instructor) just reads a powerpoint and does not really lecture or expand on it. It makes it difficult to understand the material for the test when she does this, so if you can get an understanding now, then you won't be lost in the class.
Christine2009, did the mnemonics help you at all when used them? Also do you record all the lectures or do you just record the ones right before a big test?
I record all my lectures! On my recorder I have 5 different files so I use file A for Med-Surg and file B for Pharm. This way I can keep track of what class I am listening too.
The mnemonics did not help me really...I read the book, outlined the chapter, did the online testing accompying the book, did all the check point questions in the chapter, along with the questions at the back of the chapter. Then on the rare occassion we were given a study guide for A&P, I made 3x5 cards of the questions and added information from lecture and my notes to the card to study for the test. I ended up with an A for the class doing it this way.
Now that I am in Module 2 about to start Module 3, my studying has laxed a bit b/c I am getting burned out. With no break between these modules, it is so hard and now just study to pass the class or test. I am still though an honor student...3.83 GPA, but as I stated before, these two modules are intense with alot of HW and writing as well as reading.
On Friday is our Pharm 1 final and then we have to hand write 30 pages of notes front and back of the paper to remediate our Fundamentals HESI for Module 1 that has to be turned in on Sept. 28th to move forward into module 3 along with studying for our comprehensive final for Med-Surg 1! It is just insane all the writing you have to do!

You are right! But, they taught us MONA not MOAN b/c you want to administer nitro before the ASA for the MI pt. As I said I am losing my mind...lol...I so need a break!
Congrats on being honor student! Awsome!" You got me at 30 pages of notes" wow! In the emergency field we give aspirin then nitro then ms lol wired! The mnemonics just help when memorizing skills, meds, multiple body parts etc., I got my book Monday and been studying heck outa it! Thanks for all the great advise!
