Anyone attending Gurnick Academy LVN program??

Updated:   Published

Hello,

I am also thinking of attending this school for the lvn program beginning January 2012. I've already met with Ann, the financial aid office and I am "technically" enrolled. However, after reading some of the threads, I must say I am a little discouraged. Can you please share with me some of your experiences you've had with this school? Any advice or feedback would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks

Thanks. Did you sign up for day or evening class? I'm still trying to figure out which I'd like to do.

I signed up for the day class! :)

911,

You will want to cut your hours down at work! This program is intense and very fast pace...I work 40 hours a week and it is so hard to stay on top of all the HW, reading, writing, and studying...working a 48 - 60 work week does not leave a lot of time left, if any, for studying.

Yes my hours are grueling, all in 3-4 days. So I have 3 1/2 days off! When program starts in jan I won't work those hours but during prereqs I have to. The kicker is my jobs even 2 1/2 hour drive away!!:). Talk bout crazy haha! definatly dedicated tho! Again thanks!

Just got the book for the pre-req class for only $8.00! I love ebay!

Which campus?

Wow, 2 1/2 hours away, you are hardcore, :yeah: Lol. Makes me feel like a wimp for worrying about the commute I'll have whether I go to the San Mateo campus or the Concord one.

Haha yeah I love my job!, but not the commute. I stay there for the work days then come home. Believe me it's rough :) come to the Modesto program! :) I haven't seen anyone "here" going to Modesto yet, hmm? I get my book tommoro, can't wait. We are all funny because in about 6 months I imagine we'll all be tired of all the books and Reading haha! So were does everyone live?

When you get your Anatomy & Drug Dose Calculations books...For Anatomy read chapters 1-3 (first test) and for Drug Dose start with the first 5 chapters. Your tests in Anatomy will include math problems from those chapters.

Also, when you get to Chapters 14-16 in Drug Dose in your class, find the method that works best for you. These chapters show you the 3 different ways to calculate meds. Once you have the method down, do all the problems in the 3 chapters that way so that when you get to taking your Drug Dose test (need a 75% to pass) you will be okay on the test.

I ordered the book by Cohn (health and disease one) only for now I don't have the drug dose calculations yet. Should I purchase that one as well? Or wait to get them all on my 1st day of prereqs? I also love using mnemonics ( I use in emergency medicine) and have found a few here from older posts for nursing, do you have any you know and use?

Modesto would be way too far for me, Concord is already going to be 1 hour on BART and a 25-30 min walk after but I'd used the ride to read, study flash cards, etc. and I could listen to lectures I've taped while I walk so that commute would probably help me in the long run. Besides the registration for Modesto is closed now, you probably were one of the last people they accepted into the next program there. :yeah: I live in Newark, right next door to Fremont. We probably will be ready to throw all our books in a fireplace by the time we are done, Lol. :lol2:

Yeah that would be too far! Recording lectures is a great idea I can listen during my commute! I grew up in Fremont and went to Mission High :) small world! So you start prereqs in Oct? I'm excited and get prereq a&p book tommoro from online. Researching alot online as well for ideas and nursing mnemonics; theres so many! Are you already in the medical field? When the program starts mon-fri I think oh my goodness that's gonna be long and busy for a whole year haha :)

Small world indeed. I've never used mnemonics for studying/learning. I will have to look those up too. I am a medical assistant but currently doing the SAHM thing while the hubby works. Are you in the medical field? Now that my youngest twins are in kindergarten half the day I'm looking forward to being out and about and busy with school myself.

The only memonics we were taught in prereq's were for the cranial nerves. Which was o o o to touch and feel a woman's lady parts...lol...do not ask me what they are anymore, I just learned them for a test, and that is all I remember.

For med-surg they taught us MONA = morphine (pain), oxygen (stabilize breathing), nutrition (balanced diet), aspiration (make sure pt does not chock)...I forget what this is applied to...I think it is for the post op pt...you never want to catch up with pain...

then there is "the deeper it goes, the sweeter it gets" for pharmacology but forgot what that was applied to...lol...

As you see, I am losing my mind!:uhoh3:
