Nurses LPN/LVN

Published

i am a new lvn and i'm curious to know what everyone's first job was. if you don't mind please disclose the pay scale and also...if you were to do it over again, what would you have done different? i'm so confused as to where to start. i have just enrolled with excelsior and i'm waiting for my books to get here. so i have to consider having time to study. i've thought about the baylor plan or prn at a ltc facility, but i wonder whether that would be best since i have no experience. then i have also thought about trying for a hospital, but living in dfw, i know the pay would not be great, and i think they like experience anyway. so....after my long rant, your responses would be appreciated. thanks.

My first LPN job (only job so far) is in a small hospital in NW Indiana, on the med-surg floor. The pay is $14 an hour for day shift, 14.75 for evenings, and 15.25 for midnights. The advantage of working on the m/s floor is the chance to hone our skills. eg. starting IV's, IV piggy backs, IVP, working with types of IV pumps (pca), inserting foley's, ng tubes, suctioning, med passes, assessing pts of all ages, listening for lung, heart, abdominal sounds, dressing changes, giving shots, neuro checks etc. There is so much to learn on the med-surge floor. I fell a nurse has a lot to offer after a year on the the m/s floor. Its a good base. The one thing they don't teach in nursing school is how to take off orders when admitting pts to the floor. Especially on midnights without a ward clerk. That was the toughest thing for me to learn. Writing up the orders and the MARS. On midnights we have no ward clerck or pharmacy. Every hospital has a differcnt system and or computer system The orientation at my hospital is 6 weeks.....I spend more time charting than pt care...The CNA's are the ones who do the majority of pt care.
