LVN to Hospital or Hospice

When you received your LVN liscense did you get a job at the hospital, a local hospice, or other? I've been thinking about getting a job at a hospital, getting my RN while working there (some cover tuition, I

ll learn the mechanics of the hospital) and I think the longer you stay the more you get paid so it'll be an easy transition. Has anyone done this? What route did you take to get your RN while working as an LVN?

You either live in California or Texas, as those are the only two states that use the title of 'LVN'. :)

I work full-time weekends at a nursing home. I receive Monday through Friday off, work 16 hour double shifts on Saturday and Sunday, and am paid for a 40 hour work week with full benefits. Since I have Monday through Friday off, I use these days off to attend school full-time at my local community college.

Yep! I live in California. I think you mentioned going to LVN school in So.Cal, I'm doing that too, at Stanbridge in Irvine.

16 hrs? Is that even legal? Did you have to ask for that schedule?

For now, 16 hour shifts are perfectly legal around here. I hope they remain legal for those of us who voluntarily want to work them.

My workplace offers full-time weekend schedules so that the weekday staff can have all weekends off. In my opinion, it is worth it to have 5 days off in a row and still be paid for 40 hours.

Hey, I just called Stanbridge today to go on Friday to look at the school. How much is it?? Also, I was in nursing school like 3 other times but had to move each time and could not finish because hubby as in the Air Force at the time. We live in Rancho Santa Margarita, and I am looking at Concorde, and Stanbridge, but Stanbridge is closer for me.

I wanted to get my RN, but the wait list is SOOO Long, so I thought this would be the better route, and it appears most LPN's or LVN's (old Southern habit to say LPN) make about $40k per year out here in CA, which is great pay I think.

I am from GA and had lived in SC for a total of 7 yrs 2x, and the pay for LPN's then was pathetic, like $11 an hr or less.

I thought I would do their RN program next year that they mentioned to me after completing the LPN program, and if I feel like it, or not....depends.

16 hour shifts are great..especially if you have to communte to your job... that is one reason I love them...other than the fact that I can be forced to work involentary OT..due to the enviornmewnt I work in (prison).. Now, how is THAT legal??

I worked LTC for about 3 years, then a year long stint in a treatment center before going into hospice.

Hospice takes a very called person....I don't know that I could get so attached to people and their families and then have to watch them die, so sad. I think it would have to take a toll on people/nurses after so many people die, and all the sadness. Although I think it is also a blessing to know those people in their end times and to be able to ease their pain and suffering in some small way.

God Bless you for being a hospice nurse!!! also, I think it would be hard to be a peds nurse, the kids don't understand why they are sick and hurting and are so tired of hurting and all the shots/needles, IV's and such, I would be a blubbering mess, crying all the time.

I like PACU and NICU, and OR, pts are asleep and never remember you from PACU, haha.

i'm about to take a job that is 12 hrs sat and sun (baylor plan) but that is one of the very few in this area that have that, 98% of the weekends shifts in this area are 16 hour shifts...
