  1. Thanks. I try not to let little things get to me. In the future I plan to think about it and laugh. I learned today that she is currently on chemotherapy so.....I took that into consideration. I'll just learn what I can and pray for her
  2. Recently while having a discussion with my manager on the second day of my job, the vice president comes in, introduces herself, and interrogates me about why I chose nursing and my motives for moving out of state. I did not mind the inquisition, however, a few statements made me uncomfortable and I don't know if I should report them to HR? Upon learning that I had no immediate family in the state, said "I told them not to hire people from out of state because they cost us $**,*** to train and then they leave. Just being honest." "**** is not a good medical center to work in, unless money is what matters" The following day, my manager calls me into her office and apologizes on her behalf, stating that she's not sure why she said that and that she did not want me to feel unwelcome. I accepted the apology, however, still feel a little unsettled. We were both shocked.
  3. can anyone tell me the starting new grad salary for rns at st john's? are weekends $3, pm shift $2.50??? do they count previous lvn experience?
  4. Due to the economy, I've decided to relocate and have applied to jobs out of state. I have no problem moving as I have no obligations. My father was in the military and I have been to 6 elementary schools, so I am no stranger to adapting to change. My fiance and I plan on starting a family after we settle in our new place. He works in healthcare as well and the job he does has more openings. I have no plans of leaving the state after I am hired and develop experience. Honestly, we are looking for an area that has a natural aesthetic, mountains, valleys, etc. We love the snow. The places we are considering are: SLC Utah Tulsa Oklahoma Has anyone relocated to these areas? What is your experience? How was the hiring process?
  5. I've always been a nurturing person....(though unfortunately sometimes in toxic situations.) It's trying at times but whenever I feel a bit jaded, I take a mental health day....to go running, get pampered, and spend time with loved ones. I DO want to travel and volunteer in other countries after I have experience though. Edit: And financial independence is always a plus
  6. Since I want to work in a hospital and already have my RN license, I was wondering if they'd accept me as a regular volunteer. The thing I'm concerned about is liability... I feel that by volunteering I'd get the hang out the people and culture...and maybe even get my foot in the door. Has anyone tried this?
  7. Thank you all for your support. I'm going to send a letter to their HR.
  8. You know what is worse? I just found out that they hired my coworker, who I informed of the opening because I was told they would need more people, and he was called today and asked when he could start. He told me in his interview they were looking to hire more men. #*(&$*(@*($*(@&$*(#&@$*(*(@&$*(#&$*(@(*$@*(&$#*(@$*@&$*& I am THISCLOSE to calling and being unprofessional. This is ******** on ALL levels.

Appearances do matter. I'm 5'1" and have been described as "demure" and "sweet" but there is always a limit to anyone's kindness... I understand that the first person you'd ask for help wouldn't be me if some 300 lb psych. pt decided to become combative...but I was wondering if anyone else was in this boat. I've seen some nurses that were smaller than me and had years of experience in the field. People think they can give us ****. One of my coworkers asked, "How old are you? Why did you choose nursing? Not to marry a doctor? Why ER and not L&D?" Because I want to be overworked and enjoy finding new ways of inserting things into people's orifices. Anyway, I feel that this is a disadvantage. I'm not your "Type A" personality, I'm more of a "Type B" but can switch if needed. Last time I checked being manic or strung out wasn't required for critical care neither was being boisterous because I'm definately a little obnoxious:D............
  10. Not a question, but statement, "Well, you are so calm...." Give me a break, I'm coming off the meth or maybe I'm imagining how I'm going to devour you like Hannibal Lectur. JK
  11. It used to be funny that people that were unfamiliar with healthcare would tell me that pursuing nursing was great because it was a "recession proof job", NOW, it's irritating. I have NEVER witnessed such unprofessionalism from managers and DONs. TWICE in my nursing career have I applied to jobs, where I was interviewed, offered the job verbally (NOW I know better), given a background check and drug test, then told after calling back to follow up, that the person that was quitting decided not to and that they would keep my application. Is this a SICK joke? I know better not to get my hopes up after the first time, but twice?!?!?!?!?!?!?!??! And the DON didn't even have the audacity to CALL me and let me know, instead of leaving me hanging in false hopes. You don't know how hard it is for me to not call back and say HOW DARE YOU, especially in these times. What's more is that I feel stuck in a doctor's office making the wage of an LVN although I was verbally told they would increase my pay. No one's words are good for anything these days. Seriously. I want everything in a written contract. Now, due to budget cuts, it is impossible. I know a lot of you will say I'm blessed to have a job, but not when I feel hopeless and exploited. And ANGRY. Just waiting. And waiting. And waiting. I am applying everywhere and have even entertained the idea of relocating.
  12. I wanted to know why you were chosen out of all applicants as a new grad. in the ER. Did you have other certifications other than ACLS, BLS, or PALS? Such as NIHSS and EKG? Were you an ER Tech/EMT/Paramedic prior? Did you rotate there? Did you network with others for personal references. What was the interview like? How did you contact the Director of Nursing? I've contacted Human Resources for the DON of the ER for specific hospitals so I can email them and/or fax my resume to be considered for the positions but would like insight into qualifications that would stand out.
  13. And so forth. I did a search online and the only results were for job opportunities. I've heard that BSN RNs are automatically II, is this true? Also, as a new grad. RN with an Associate's (soon to be, fingers crossed) will I have to have a year(s) of clinical experience to become II, or is there a course/exam/certification to do? Lastly, how much is compensation pertaining to salary? Lost
  14. I am an RN student graduating May 2010 and did my Advanced Med/Surg. rotation at this hospital and fell in love!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I am particularly interested in working in the ER. I am interested in knowing if they prefer Santa Ana college students over others. For those of you that work there, how are the hours, pay, and are they hiring new grads? Thank you
  15. Thank you! I've finally adjusted to the RN program here. Rns have so much more independence, something I'm not used to as an LVN. Good luck in your classes and keep your head up. You'll be an LVN before you know it.
