just a quick question

hi. i'm a cna in the ar/ok area & i am looking for an on-line lpn program. i can't seem to find one locally. i would like to do distance learning so that i won't have to quit my job. i work in a mental health outpatient clinic.

there is no such thing as an online lpn. please visit your board of nursing website and check out the approved lpn schools.

just google it by typing "board of nursing (your state)"

p.s. there is however an "online" lpn to rn program such as excelsior college but you need to be an lpn first.

Canada offers distance ed PN programmes. Probably due to the geographic size of our country in comparison to the US.

Drawbacks for you would be, out of country fees, you would be required to attend clinicals up here.

It looks like you may have to either give up the dream or move to achieve it.

Hi Ginza, i just read your post and was wondering if you could help me out. I am currently a stay at home mom but want to go back to school for lpn/rn. I have to take it one step at a time, because i have 2 young children. My community college requires you to be a CNA before you can get into the RN program. I LOVE the mental health field, and see that you are currently a cna there. what my plans are is to become a cna, work in the mental health field, to gain expereience and earn money while i go to school for rn. what is the mental health field like? do you enjoy it? tell me everything!!! I would eventually like to by a psych rn.

I have not heard of an on line LPN program, and thinking about it, I'm not sure I would want it. From what I see, licensed practical nursing is the foundation of basic nursing care, including medication administration, skills that need hands on such as suctioning, tube feedings, administering injections, dressing changes, catheter insertion and a host of other things. Many LPNs enter the program not having been a nursing assistant, and need the initial hands on experience to function as a basic nurse, making it necessary at least have worked the atmosphere during clinicals to get a feel. the mental health field is , for me , very fun & interesting. You see and learn alot about those with mental illnesses and you learn a lot about the psych drugs and why they are so heavily prescribed. Where I work, is a counseling & guidence center, with Psychiatrists, Nurse Practioners, Psychologists & therapist. I work hands on with the Drs. and NP's. I take their patients back and check there VS before they see the Dr. or NP. With all of the various psych drugs there are a lot of side effects that can affect the weight with weight gain or weight loss and that needs to be monitored, as well as some drugs that affect the blood pressure and heart rate. My job is basically to obtain all of that and record it in the chart and give to the doctors and NP's. I also have some various clinical work as well. What I have learned about the various mental illnesses is that there are more than what I had eve imagined. You have those who are Bi-polar with manic as well as depression. Shizophrenia, anxiety, parnoia (Sometimes with schizophrenia, sometimes with anxiety and certian phobias). There is such a wide range of things that I can not even begin to think of. And even when one drug works with one person, it may not work with another, even when they both have the same diagnosis. I have not worked in a Psych hosp setting, I have always wanted to, but I have 2 kids and I need the daycare hours. My hours that I work are from 8:30am to 5:00 pm. With weekends and holidays off.

As a CNA you will learn alot about nursing and what field you would like to work in. I have been a CNA for 13yrs and this is the first "office" job I have had. Good luck to ya and I wish you the best. If there is a Psych hosp near you, inquire with them about becoming a Psych Tech. Some states require that a psych tech be a CNA and some do not, you may want to check with your state on that.

Wow, Ginza, very cool. I just checked out your website for your place of employment, and actually thats exactly the type of setting I am looking for, I am not sure I want a psych hospital, at least not right away. I want to work with adolescents, in crises (eating disorders, depression, substance abuse, etc) . You are very lucky. Thanks so much for the website. I will keep in touch. Thanks again.
