Nursing in Canada?

If I wanted to move up to Canada and take a job there, what route would I take after I get my BSN?

i will go to canada as an immigrant soon. I already have my permanent resident visa. I will stay in Ontario. I want to know what are the things I need to do to apply for CNRE? What do I have to accomplish while I am still here in the Philippines. How will I apply? Do I need to apply/register in CNO first? How will i do that? Please help me. I don't know what to do.

Sheesh, this is the third thread that I've found this request in.

Patience is a big part of nursing in Canada and dealing with the application process.

Im still here in the philippines and I plan to leave before October. I only have General training IELTS since this is the requirement my agency told me to take for immigrant status. I should have taken the academic, anyway, it already expired. So, I plan to take the IELTS on August or September. Can I apply to CNO now or I'll wait til I got my IELTS results? As much as possible I want to finish everything I need to submit before leaving the Philippines. I didnt know the requirements for CNO until last night. :( I planned to review for CNRE but I didnt know the process is that I have to register in CNO. Please advise me on what to do first. I appreciate your reply. :)

additional to the previous post i made. so, if I havent applied to CNO yet, is it possible for me to work as a health care aide first or caregiver or a any lower position than a nurse? I have a permanent residence visa.

You can apply to the CNO at any point you want to, however if you apply and your qualifications are not equivilant to the Canadian qualifications you will be declined the opportunity to take the exam and would have to pay again to be reassessed once you have done the IELTS. It might be worth doing the IELTS earlier if you can and then apply before you arrive. If you have a permanent residency visa then yes I believe you can work in a lower position before you are registered.

In order to write the CRNE you have to be eligible to register with the CNO which means fulfilling all other requirements. Take a look at their website

Every province have their own standards of assessment but I think your case going to the CRNE will be pretty much straight forward coz you got ur BSN from the states. For employment, you can do some research about the nursing job market in each province and that could help you decide which place you would like to go. Just be patient and allow a year, or atleast 6months for the whole process, goodluck

If I apply as a health care aide or nurse assistant or caregiver, is the IELTS result a requirement for these jobs for me to get hired even though I have a PR VISA already? If not, maybe I shouldn't take the IELTS just yet.

I'm confused now if I should take the IELTS here, because if I havent applied to CNO right away(I'm still completing my funds for the application), my IELTS might expire again.

advanced question: let's say I've already worked as a health care aide/caregiver or any similar job for a year or so(meaning I've stayed in Canada for quite some time as a permanent resident), then I decided to apply for registration in CNO, will they still require the IELTS though I've stayed in Canada for example a couple of years already?

Would be up to the college but expect them to want IELTS because it is important that you can converse with people from patients to work colleagues and everything in-between. I know things are probably expensive but I would suggest you start the process sooner rather than later especially when concerning your nursing documents because any issues and you are no longer in the Philippines may make it harder to sort out.

IELTS is an absolutely non-negotiable part of the registration process for anyone who was educated in a primarily non-English speaking country. It doesn't matter how long you've lived and worked in an unregulated job in Canada. There are hundreds of thousands of immigrants here who cannot speak a word of English even though they've lived here for decades. One example that leaps to mind is an East Indian couple who had been living in Calgary for more than twenty years who returned to India for in vitro treatments they couldn't obtain here due to thier advanced ages. They had to be interviewed by a Punjabi interpreter about the miraculous premature births of their twin sons. This sort of situation is why health care providers MUST have a reasonable command of English and be able to prove it.

Will add now Canada requires IELTS even if you are from a English speaking country and have done for over 12 months.

what i mean is, even if I will work as a caregiver OUTSIDE THE HOSPITAL, will the employer ask for the IELTS results?

I know IELTS is a requirement when I apply for CNO, but I WILL NOT APPLY YET (Maybe in a couple of years). I can always take the IELTS when I'm decided to apply. my grandad told me to set aside applying to CNO and work as a caregiver 1st.

so, do most caregiver employers require IELTS or no? because I plan to take it on august, but my grand dad want me to leave asap! as in next week he wants me to leave already. because he claims, he is a caregiver and was not required of IELTS when he worked outside the hospital.

If I get hired as a caregiver without IELTS (or maybe I can show my expired IELTS result) then I will leave asap. because when i apply in CNO after a couple of years and I took the IELTS now, it will be useless as it will expire after 2 years.

It would be up to the individual employer as to whether or not they expect their UNregulated employees to have fluency in English. Many long-term care facilities are privately owned and have fewer standards than those operated by the government. As well , there are individuals who hire caregivers and pay out-of-pocket for them and they tend to be a lot less picky. They also pay quite a lot less. Please be aware that you will not be able to use your experience as a caregiver for your application to CNO. It will give you a meagre income but will not mean anything to CNO at all.

hello richsimon, I would like to ask how long you've been waiting for your canadian visa from the begining you've applied? Is it skilled worker? and how many points you've got? I just applied this month and hopefully everything goes well. thanks!
