VA Hiring Process

From the previous posts I've read the VA hiring process is pretty long and drawn out. I've applied to two different VA sites. The VA an hour away from my home I can always get in contact with a nurse recruiter and my application status for two posting says "referred to selecting official." The VA closest to my home, I can't get through to the recruiter, she emailed me back once and the status of all the apps just says "application received." I do know a nurse practitioner that works at this VA site and she tried to give my resume to the recruiter, but I had to apply online.

For those of you that are familiar with the hiring process, any idea what the next step is. In all there are around 20 RN vacancies. The two systems have two completely different online application submissions, how will I know if I've completed the application process correctly, its a little confusing :(

I've been applying since I've graduated and earlier this year I found out that I was applying the wrong way so those positions don't count. These positions closed in September.

Thanks in advance ?

So I received an email today stating that my credentialing is completed and that I should get a call soon with potential start dates. Does anyone know if they have certain days in the month they start new employees? I am going to give my current employer a 4 week notice and I know this sounds strange but I want to take like a week off before I start my new job at the VA. I feel like I need a break because where I work now it is extremely stressful. Do you think taking an extra week before starting would jeopardize anything for me or am I just being paranoid :) ?

VA won't care what time you took off between leaving your current job and starting there, not in the least. Why would they?

Typically, you should expect to start on a Monday morning; plan on M-F until you get "your" work schedule. Again, typically, HR orientation will take about two days (ymmv) and Nursing orientation is typically about a week, BUT there are variables. You won't necessarily have the Nursing orientation (by this I mean classroom-only orientation) until after you get to the floor; much will depend on when other nurses are starting in that month and how many. It's not unusual to have a few days of HR, then go to floor, then back to Education for the nursing-specific stuff. Again, YMMV.

Going with "typically", NEO (New Employee Orientation) is every two weeks; every other Monday a new group starts. Size of group, makeup of employees (nursing? Admin? housekeeping?) may affect when anyone is slated to start.

Good luck!

^That's how I'm starting off.

Monday-NEO *this coincides with the start of the new pay period

Tuesday-Culture of Excellence

Wed-Fri-Centralized Nursing Orientation (CNO)

Followed by a 6-8 week orientation at my clinic

Bingo.

I probably should have said that the q2week NEO is always coordinated with pay weeks. Your EOD date will be the day before (Sunday) as all PPs are Sun-Sat.

Good luck!

Waiting still to here firm offer. Completed physical, vetpro, equip, now just waiting on things to move forward n get that firm offer.

I kept in contact w/my HR rep and found out who hadn't turned in the vetpro paperwork on me. I know people get busy, and I haven't always been the quickest in sending out recommendations for friends myself. But the vetpro feedback is usually the biggest holdup in the process. I just sent them friendly reminders to turn it in so that I could start working :)

Hi,

I was recently offered a job at the VA, and I will go through the new graduate nurse program. I was wondering have anyone went to the VA new graduate nurse program, and if so what can I expect from the program.

You'll go to class one a month for a year. Have a mentor along with ur preceptor on the floor ur working at. Have to do a evidence based project and present it to the higher reps of the hospital. Im in my 4th month of the program

Thank you for your response! How do you like the program so far? Has it been helpful?

I like the progrom so far and working for the VA as well. Being a new grad I was worried about the transition to professional from student. But i didn't have any problems. Everyone at my facility is very nice and helpful

So here is my story. I was called by the nurse recruiter for the VA in my state because I had submitted a resume about 6 months prior to her email. I was told that the interview would be tentative to me passing a test. The interview was scheduled for the same day if I passed the test. That was January 8. I went in and was told that the manager would not be available for an interview as she had a personal situation and had to leave the country and would be rescheduled if I passed. I passed at 96%. So I went home and waited and called twice and was told that that they haven't started the interviewing process. However, after speaking to some of the ladies here about the ease of potentially transferring after I have the job since I was planning on moving from NY in about a year or so. I was told that I would have to apply all over again, so I opted to apply to the state I am moving to. The application closed mar 6 and I was called for an interview the week after, and the following week was offered tentative position pending credentialing. I just completed vetpro today which took 2 hours and I have to say was quite stressful as I did not have some information needed for work history. So it kept reverting back saying I needing information as it was greater than 30 days. I had to supply info that was 11 years ago before I became a nurse, as it counted my graduation date to when I actually started working as a nurse....geez. I will be doing my physical next week and am in the process of completing the demensions. After all of this....guess what? The initial job in my current state just called me today since Jan 8 for an interview. I think I'm gonna pass at that one. What do yall think?

I think you ought to do whatever is best for you.

Good luck!
