VA Hiring Process

Published

From the previous posts I've read the VA hiring process is pretty long and drawn out. I've applied to two different VA sites. The VA an hour away from my home I can always get in contact with a nurse recruiter and my application status for two posting says "referred to selecting official." The VA closest to my home, I can't get through to the recruiter, she emailed me back once and the status of all the apps just says "application received." I do know a nurse practitioner that works at this VA site and she tried to give my resume to the recruiter, but I had to apply online.

For those of you that are familiar with the hiring process, any idea what the next step is. In all there are around 20 RN vacancies. The two systems have two completely different online application submissions, how will I know if I've completed the application process correctly, its a little confusing :(

I've been applying since I've graduated and earlier this year I found out that I was applying the wrong way so those positions don't count. These positions closed in September.

Thanks in advance ?

I GOT THE JOB!!!! Start the 4th

I GOT THE JOB!!!! Start the 4th

Congrats!! Welcome aboard :D

5weeks vaca, 13 sick days n 10 paid holidays no weekends either!!!! Yes I'm staying here for the long run

title 38 nurses RNs and NPs (me) get, 4 hours a pay day (every 2 weeks) and 8 hours of AL every pay day (every 2 weeks). I work 0730 to 4p and love those hours, yep, no weekends, no call (awesome, sick to death of call) and fed holidays off (not as good as state of TEXAS holidays) but oh well.

Hopeful girl, if you ever see a job opening in your VA for Home based primary care....jump on it, best job you will ever have.

One thing though, its harder to walk into a job at HBPC or CBOC (community clinic). I'm working third shift at the med center in Lexington, biding my time until I get a job at a nearby CBOC. Could be a long wait.

My VA hires many agency RNs for amb positions. :(

Finally the long wait is over. I am starting May 18th. Hopefully everyone's process will have positive outcome. I learned to be patient during this whole ordeal

I'm a disabled Desert Storm/Shield Gulf War Vet with a BSN. I have over 24 years of experience in emergency medicine. My last 13 years are that of a Registered Nurse. My disability is related to hearing (w/aides) and inhalation of biological agents. I have a squeaky clean record, and have even held Secret clearances during my tenure. I have applied to multiple facets of Nursing vacancies. I have received only "Referred" responses since 2013! During my recent appointment at my local VA, out of frustration, I asked my intake nurse "what does it take to get a VA job?" She exclaimed to me. "Honey, it's all in who you know! we retire, we don't quit, and we don't get fired!" :( ...

I am sad.

HM3/AVT, RN, BSN, United States Navy. Why?

I did not know anyone when I was hired. Neither did a coworker hired soon after. That being said, many positions at my facility are posted only internally and are filled with current VA employees wishing to transfer to a different department. It seems outside hires are often to ICU or med surg. There are also several agency RNs filling long term positions which I don't understand. Maybe it's just budgetary but I don't know. I would advise that you keep applying. Look at the PBI questions if you haven't already. Good luck.

I didn't know anyone either. I was on active duty (US Army) from 99-03. I know it's stated that prior service gets points in the hiring process, but I doubt how much weight that really carries. I was hired in to stepdown unit, with 3:1 patient/RN ratio. At my previous civilian job, I worked in the exact same capacity. That's the only reason I got interviewed, and hired.

It's tough to get on, I had applied for open and continuous jobs on the USA jobs site, and never received one interview. I applied for a stepdown unit job, thinking I had nothing else to lose, and got a call to interview a week later.

I am beyond frustrated!!!!

I applied for an RN position at the Jesse Brown VA Medical Center in Chicago on February 2nd. I had my interview on February 25th and a nurse recruiter called me on March 31st. I have since given her my transcript, 3 letters of recommendation and the 306 form. I've also submitted my VETPRO and EQIP, did my physical, fingerprinting and my references have submitted all the requested information. After all of this, I have YET to receive a start date.

I called HR requesting an update and was told via email that some of my clearances are still pending. I submitted the credentialing and background stuff a month ago. How much more time do they need?

I''m very disappointed and pissed off. I have gotten calls for interviews at private hospitals and I'm torn on whether or not I should pursue any of them.

Natira, this is why the government misses out on great employees - they take too long to hire people! My Army hospital has lost new hires to civilian jobs that moved more quickly. I will say that the benefits of a government job are worth the wait, if you can hold out. Good luck!
