Part time HH RN
I did mention my desire to work three days a week. I plan on asking more questions when I shadow. I was just wondering if anyone finds this type of work to be flexible with having a family

Part time HH RN
Hello, I just wanted to get some opinions. I have a one year old son and my husband and I have been running into problems with child care. We decided it would be best for me to go part time. I interviewed for a large home health agency and will be shadowing someone in a few days. I'm looking for some flexibility in scheduling and looking forward to more time with my son. I'm worried that I'm going to be working long days on the days I'm scheduled. Just wondering if hh is a good avenue for me in my current situation . I would like to work 3 days a week. Thank you!

Vatica Health
Has anyone ever heard of a company called Vatica Health? They are looking to hire nurse consultants in my area. I have a phone interview Thursday and was wondering if they were decent to work for?

I want to quit first RN job after a few weeks.
I completely understand. My first nursing job was on a sub acute rehab floor. I received very little training and was left in charge at times! I was completely overwhelmed and had little to no support. I lasted 6 months. I left and went to an acute rehab floor and have been there for about 3 years now. Much better environment. Good luck, don't stress yourself out to death. It isn't worth it. Next time you interview and tour a unit I'm sure you will be able to tell what type of environment it is. Make sure you ask about the orientation you will receive as well.

Likes\dislikes
Hi, I recently interviewed for an RN position working in group homes. I'd be responsible for 3 houses. I was wondering what you like most about working in this type of setting and what you dislike? What is the most stressful part of the job?

Maybe nursing wasn't for me?
Hi there, Not sure if this helps but I went through a lot of the same feelings when I was in nursing school and about to graduate. I dreaded clinicals as well and I really questioned myself towards the end because of how I felt with going to the hospital. A good part of this is just lack of confidence, at least it was for me anyway. I've been a nurse now for almost 4 years. I can tell you that the more you challenge yourself, the more comfortable you will eventually feel. Have you tried local human services agencies such as non profit organizations for people with mental illness, developmental disabilities, substance abuse? You can find nursing positions in a variety of settings that are not in the hospital.

Present vs. future advice
Hello, I'm seeking advice to some dilemmas I have been facing. Hopefully I won't sound like I am rambling here but I'll try to give a good overview: I am an RN and currently work on a rehab floor at a VA. I work 12s with one 8hr shift every 2 weeks. My commute to work is about an hour each way. I love working for the VA but have been trying very hard for the past year or so to try to transfer within to something different. I've been an RN now for almost 4 years and rehab nursing is all I have done. I am looking for outpatient type work, something with steady hours, no weekends/holidays etc. I've applied and interviewed for about 4 positions within (some medical case management positions and an OR position) and keep getting turned down. I have a background as a social worker/case manager. Before I became a nurse I worked with people with mental illness and developmental disabilities. I like working with these populations and would really like to work with them again in the future. I keep hoping that something in the VA outpatient clinic will open up and I can apply there so I can work in the psych field again. I feel like I've been waiting and waiting and as time goes by I'm becoming more unhappy with my job. Fast forward to the present: My husband and I welcomed a beautiful baby boy in November and I took the opportunity while on maternity leave to search for jobs outside of the VA. I am supposed to return to work next week. I wouldn't mind going part time for a while and asked my current manager if she would let me, of course the answer was no. Having a baby has made me want to amp the job search to get closer to home and have better hours. Even though I've been with the VA for a few years, I'm still low in seniority, so I tend to work 3-4 12hr shifts in a row and I am dreading going back because of this. I will hardly see my baby at all for days at a time, plus my commute is exhausting. While on maternity leave I interviewed for a local human services agency (working with people with developmental disabilities in residential houses) that offered me decent pay, closer to home, good hours and benefits that aren't too bad. (Not as good as the VA). I believe they may even let me work part time for a while and go full by the end of the year. They seem to want to work with me. What raised a little red flag was they hired me on the spot. I told them I would think about it and contact them back. I almost accepted, but then got nervous and turned it down last minute. I know it seems crazy because here I am ranting about how bad I want another job. I got nervous because I worry about my future so much. I feel like working for the VA offers job security, a great retirement, and affordable health insurance. Plus its such a pain to go through the VA hiring process. I also love being a VA nurse and keep hoping for that perfect outpatient job opening that is taking longer than I expected to come. I guess I'm just looking to hear what you would do. Would you take the job offered so you can be with family more, be closer to home and be happier with what you do for a living? Or would you wait? Hope that your perfect job opens up, hope that you interview and get an offer, have good job security and a good retirement? Have affordable health insurance? Thank you for reading my rant :). My husband tells me to follow my heart and do what feels right. I want to take that other job but I feel like I could have a good potential career at the VA and really grow there.

case mgmt advice
Hi all, I worked as a case manager in the psych field for about 5 years and enjoyed it. I have a background in social work and during this time I went back to school and got my rn with all intentions of going into medical case management. I knew I needed some bedside experience so I went into a sub acute rehab floor as my first job out of nursing school. I HATED it..... I had ratios of 15 to 20 or more patients and was trained very little. It was so stressful. I lasted 6 months there then went onto an acute rehab floor at a VA. Its been almost a year here now and I'm not loving this job either. I've been stuck on nights with no sight of any day shift options anytime soon. I have a very long commute to work..about an hour which is hard after a 12 hr night shift. I've been crossing my fingers for a cm position within the Va but nothing is coming up. As much as I love the Va and its awesome benefits/retirement .. I think I need to do what I intended which is cm. Sorry for the rant... My questions are: How different is social work type cm from medical/insurance type cm? Do big name iinsurance co offer good benefits? Am I being foolish to leave the Va system? I know this is hard to answer but seeing as I've been hopping jobs... My biggest fear is that I wont like my next job just because ive been so unhappy in nursing so far...trust me i hate to admit thate..do you think I would like working for an insurance co if I enjoyed doing cm in the past? Any recommendations on where to apply? I'd love to go back into behavioral health. Thank you so much for any input

VA Hiring Process
So I received an email today stating that my credentialing is completed and that I should get a call soon with potential start dates. Does anyone know if they have certain days in the month they start new employees? I am going to give my current employer a 4 week notice and I know this sounds strange but I want to take like a week off before I start my new job at the VA. I feel like I need a break because where I work now it is extremely stressful. Do you think taking an extra week before starting would jeopardize anything for me or am I just being paranoid :) ?

VA Hiring Process
So I approached my floor manager today about using her as a reference and she agreed. I'm also going to use my clinical nursing instructor from senior year as my second reference but I'm struggling with coming up with a 3rd. Would a CNA that I work closely with be okay to put as my 3rd reference who is "familiar with my clinical abilities"?

VA Hiring Process
This is from my letter: "An additional component of the credentialing process is a personal reference check. You will be asked to provide three personal references and they will be sent a request letter via mail. It is recommended that you contact your references to request their cooperation in returning the letter in a timely manner, as this will impact your date of employment." This is in my paragraph that explains VETpro. After this it explains Eqip as a totally separate background check.... And that its basically another questionnaire I have to do. What do you think?

VA Hiring Process
So I received a conditional offer of employment through my email today and am waiting for my VETpro link still. In the email it states that they are going to require me to put 3 PERSONAL references into VETpro. I thought it was going to have to be coworkers that can judge my clinical capabilities. I'm wondering if this is because I'm a fairly new nurse still with about 6 mths of experience.. does anyone know if they ask for personal if you don't really have much nursing experience?
