I got fired today

Been in nursing for five years and this is my first time being fired. I got fired from a LTC facility.I had to reschedule my class room orientation due to having an exam and had one call out for on the floor orientation due to being sick. I never got the chance to even orient on the floor. I told them during the interview that I'm a nursing student and everyone was okay with that, well so I thought. I want to start applying for other jobs but how do I explain this termination. So heart-broken. :crying2:

- Oh btw the way they fired me was very disappointing. I was supposed to begin on the floor orientation today at 3pm, I arrived early at 2pm. I went to HR and she told me to wait for the DON to see what floor I would be orienting one. The DON made me sit and wait for her in an office for an hour before telling me I was fired. The HR manager had NO idea the DON plan on firing me. The HR manager even accepted my voided check for Direct Deposit. After I got fired, the HR director called me into her office and gave me a hug. She stated that she was so sorry and had no idea. She also stated that I could use her as a reference. I'm so in shock. As I was being fired I went into a state of shock. Right now I could of thought of so many questions I could of asked and should have pleaded with them to keep me on board. Wow.

There are no problems only more options and solution, you just have to search for them. When one door closes another opens. I am so sorry this happened to you. :(

I don't think you have to list this either. If you didn't work there and collect a paycheck them I don't see that you were fired. I would see it as, for whatever reason, the DON changed her mind about hiring you. To be employed somewhere you need to have worked and received payment; that's why some places ask about employment and volunteer work separately.

I'll keep you in my prayers tonight. Try to regroup, I know its hard.

The whole situation stinks. I would definitely not put it on my resume, you never worked there! Look at the bright side, with a DON like that, this place would have definitely caused you grief. Looks like a blessing in disguise to me. This was not your fault, don't let the buggers get you down. Hang in there, a better job is waiting just for you!:heartbeat

Thank you all for the kind words. I wonder if I can file for unemployment.

You can always FILE for unemployment. Whether you will get it will depend on your work history from the past 10 quarters. It won't just be from that job. But since you were not fired for cause and the HR person is on your side you could give it a shot. Usually if you are fired you have to wait 3 months for benefits. Like I said, though, give it a shot. May help tide you over.

I'm trying to look at the glass half full: At least I get to spend Thanksgiving with my family ( I already told them I won't be avail. for dinner due to working 3-11p) and I can focus more on school ( I graduate in 4 weeks). I'm going to stay focused and stay positive.

Sorry to hear that you were let go, OP. I know it feels awful right now, but this will pass!! :heartbeat

While I'm sure some will disagree, I'm with those who say not to list this job on your resume. Several years ago I gave two weeks notice during orientation (decided to try a new area of nursing and it ended up being a horrible fit). The next thing I know, I was called into the DON's office that same day, and told that I was being terminated. I guess they figured it didn't make sense to continue training me, knowing I would be leaving.

I have never put that job on any application/resume, and it has never been brought to my attention. It's also not on my credit report or my employment history background check (at least not the ones I recently pulled). If I'm asked about it in the future, I will say that I didn't list it because I was still on orientation/probation. And I would also mention that I knew it wasn't a good fit, gave notice, and was subsequently let go.

I know it's possible that it will come back to haunt me one day. But it's a chance I choose to take. However, if you do decide to list it, just tell them exactly what happened. That's all you can do. And if a future job is meant to be, it will work out.

For the record, a friend of mine got fired a few months ago. She was devastated. Then after 6 weeks, she ended up getting a job she adores, making almost $10,000 more a year. And she even put her last job on her resume, that she was fired from. So being let go doesn't have to be the end of the world. Try to hang in there. Things will look up!

There's never an easy or good way to terminate someone. I always go through HR. In most places, during the first 90 days you can be let go for any reason at all. I've ne ER seen the have you been fired question on an application.

I think you'll find a job that fits you with a DON who is helpful and understands the needs of people in school.

What about when the application states " have you been fired before" I don't want to lie and say no, what should I put down without making myself look bad.

I would ask that really nice HR employee about it. To verify employment I think they would have to call her anyways, so if she says to put it on or leave it off your resume, that's what I would do. I don't think you will have to seeing as you never even did orientation. The DON sounds like a piece of work, I think you dodged a bullet.

I think I dodged a bullet too. I had a bad feeling about it. Other employees complained as well. Oh, well. Tomorrow I will begin job hunting... this too shall pass.

I'm glad ur getting out there. That is crazy, the way u were terminated. Several yrs ago I took a job working as an office LPN - it was a doc that I had worked with in the hospital setting. I came in and oriented with an office assistant, or something like that. Been so long, I can't remember. The "head LPN" was out on vacation.

Well, color me stupid - the day the LPN came back from vacation I was terminated. Turns out, the doc told the LPN that if she couldn't find someone to come work, she didn't get her vacation time. What an -----!

Sounds to me like that job was going to be a nightmare for you, sooner or later. You might have dodged something relly bad later. Hugs to u, and good luck in the job hunt!

I agree with those that say don't mention it on your resume - or in an interview. Better to say you were just focusing on school for awhile and are now looking for another job. Sorry that happened.
