Ok I need some advice. I have worked in the hospital for ten years and tentatively accepted an RN position at a skilled rehab. The ratio is 12-15 pts per 1 nurse, 1 cna, sometimes there might be a med aide. I am a little disgusted with the pay as its only 20.00 hr and I feel I am worth more than that but it is better than nothing at the moment. As I have only worked hospital I don't know what the normal standards are and I really don' t want something similiar to the hospital as I feel I am burned out. any suggestions.

20 bucks is low. I wouldn't accept that amount. Is there anywhere else in the hospital you can transfer to?

A ration of 12 to 15 patients per 1 nurse is normal for most skilled rehab units in my area. If you are expected to administer your own medications in addition to all of the wound care, CPM machines, halo cleaning, admission paperwork, etc., then expect to work your buns off.

You will likely be expected to do your own fingersticks, pass your own meds, do your own admissions (no unit secretaries in LTC), deal with 15 different families who can sometimes be very hostile, and assist the CNA with his/her work.

One of the hospitals here is laying off lots of employees including nurses. Sometimes taking a lower paying job at least pays the bills until you find another one. 12-15 patients sounds pretty good.

its not in the hospital. its a ltc facility with a rehab attached

The pay is low, especially for a facility that is probably considered LTC. The RNs at my facility are starting al $24 + per hour. They have between 20-23 pts. to pass meds on, do treatments for, and document on, along with deal with the docyors that come in, note orders, and do admissions. A lot of times they get pulled from their normal floor because there is something on a different floor that the LPN in charge can't do. Ask for more or go somewhere else.

OK, if it tells you anything, I am an LPN and got offered a job at a rehab here in town making that, so you as RN I would think should make more than that!

LVNs at my facility start at 18 / hr - I'd say 20 is low for an RN.

I turned down that job and got a pt one in an assisted living facility place for dementia pts. better pay. 8 hour shifts.
