    They still have vail beds but restraint laws make it very hard to use them. I used them on inpatient neuroscience rehab with brain injury patients.

    I have never seen one of these beds in my life, It would've been great for a resident where I used to work who used to have such bad tremors she'd manage to get from the middle of 2 hospital beds next to each other, get over the bed-rails and end up on the floor. We actually had meetings regularly about her and what we could do to keep her safe.

    I hadn't seen one, or even mittens for that matter, until I worked at my 2nd hospital. They are wonderful for patient safety IMO!

    If this resident is as alert and oriented as you say, then you have a right to call the police and charge him with assault. And I would let this resident know that is your plan if he puts his hands on you again. Maybe your management staff will wake up and do something when they've had to speak to the police about why they are allowing this patient to stay at the facility when he's assaulting everyone?! Census issues are no reason to allow your staff to be abused and assaulted. And there should be a number listed to your state agency on a bulletin board to be used in cases of abuse. This number is not just for residents! It's for anyone who is reporting ANY type of abuse. This patient is not appropriate for your facility and needs to be moved immediately before he hurts one of the other residents who are counting on you and your co-workers to protect them!

    BTW-I believe it is a "Vale" bed, named after the person who invented it. Mostly used in pediatrics but sometimes used in psych facilities in patients with multiple falls and no safety awareness. Must be assessed for, care planned, given consent for, re-evaluated frequently, and documented on every shift with fail! But can be used in extreme cases.
