i see all these posts of people with above 3.8 GPA and above 90 Teas scores.....why do you want to do nursing? why not get into engineering, math or medicine? you are obviously smart and yet you want to to boast here while taking a course that is obviously too easy for you? i dont get it.. is nursing your passion or you just need a job? thats why we are short on engineers, doctors etc

Seriously? ... I don't even know what to say ...

We're boasting about taking a class that's too easy? How about we're proud we busted our butts to achieve those grades! Omg!

This is what you chose for your first post on a nursing board? Ain't you just a ray of fricking sunshine?

Smart people become nurses because it's what they want. Do you think only dumb people should be nurses?

My daughter wouldn't be a nurse in a million years, and starts college this fall to become an aerospace engineer/physicist. That doesn't make her aspirations better, just different. Besides they'll need nurses for colony she helps start on Mars. :p

Because maybe those people aren't interested in engineering, math, or medicine?

Because I like helping people. Because a smart nurse can save your life? Because engineering is boring?

It took me over a decade to realize that I wanted to be a nurse. I saw first hand the positive change that a nurse can have on an individual and their family. I saw extraordinary men and women perform an often times thankless job so that their patient and family can feel comforted. I want to be a nurse so that I can provide care and comfort to all my patients. And to the OP it's ok that you devalue nurses because rest assured when you need one they will provide you wonderful care regardless of your opinions towards them.

Would you like a sub par nurse? Besides a smart nurse saves your life by correcting a not so smart doctor ! And furthermore...teas scores and gpa's prior to nursing school mean nothing in regards to performance in nursing school... Not even on the same wavelength!

What assumptions are leading to the shortage of engineers and MDs due to increase of individuals diverted toward nursing? Why dont YOU do something about it if it bothers you that much? And what does it matter? it's not your business what someone else wants to pursue. It's your own if you can't reach it. Besides, there's more people here inquiring assistance or gauging competition than boasting.

Are you implying that nursing is a second class profession? We don't need calculus, or to know integrals to do our work, but give an engineer the job of caring and improving the life of a human being and you will see no matter how smart engineers are they cant do it. When you are a nurse you have in your hands the life of another human being, and to better care for them you require lots and lots of knowledge and intelligence.

Also not everybody wants to be an MD, nursing provides opportunities for those that want to enter the healthcare field but don't have a trust fund, or an extraordinary preparation for the acceptance to med school.

We all are professionals in different fields, engineers, doctors, and nurses; all form an integral part of society. And being one or the other does not means that you are smarter or less smart. Or that you are wasting your fantastic GPA.

There is no shortage of engineers, as many as needed can be imported from other countries, and they do so. Its a matter of basic economics... If there were a shortage of engineers, their pay would be astronomical, therefor bringing more people into the profession.

The shortage of physicians is artificial, created by a limited and manipulated supply of doctors by med schools. It could be easily alleviated by opening more med schools, but that will not happen.

And as a final point, not everyone

is appealed by those careers that you mention. I want a job that pays well and has good hours, I got tired of working 60+ hours and missing on life.

Well, maybe you should be evaluating your own career choices instead of trying to analyze the choices of others.

If you feel intelligent people shouldn't be nurses, why are you here?

Because I'm smart enough and I am sure that are many who are also smart enough to appreciate the nursing model and to work in such a model. ;)
