Whining classmates, bad attitude

I'm sure every class has their whiners and bad attitudes but what can I do about it?

There are 4 people in our class who regularly interrupt class to complain about anything and everything. Then there is the girl who wants to improve the mental health status of everyone in class (instructors included) but only during class time!!:devil::devil:

Some of our classes are only 1 hour a week, so if all 5 of these attention seekers interject something, one third of our class time is lost. It's not fair to the rest of us.

Do I just deal with this? Do I ask my instructors for advice? Do I ask them to shut up?

Ok...I'm not going to tell them to shut up but I am just so frustrated with these people. I mean really, if you don't want to drive ALL THE WAY to clinical site...what are you doing here in the first place?

;)(Now I'm being the whiner, aren't I?);)

Would you like some cheese with your whine? :p

There's a few people along those lines in every class. If you get lucky, your instructor will be able/willing to handle them. Or someone might say something about shutting up (hopefully with a bit of tact) that would actually stick to those wonderful paople. But most of the time all you can do is ignore them and make the best of the situation.

Good luck!

It could be worse. I had a sister who whined about everything. At least I could reach over and sock her every once in a while. When we talk on the phone she still manages to turn the conversation into a whining session all about her problems.

Groups of students from our class went to various instructors last semester (not planned) to complain about the talkers in our class. You can bet it didn't take long after they started getting numerous complaints for the instructors to take up with these groups in class. It helped a lot. I'm not one for getting in someone else's face because I am useless when it comes to the quick reply. I'm one that needs to ruminate for a few days to come up with the snappy reply, lol....so it worked out great that others were taking this up with instructors before the group closest to the talkies decided to. By that time, they knew we weren't just "whiners"....

Good luck!!

Amazing! We have the same sister. :uhoh3:

Here's what you do.......ready? great advice....

IGNORE THEM!!!!!! Either they will get the hint or not, but you can't let them affect you.....you will work with people that way all the time, but you just have to do what YOU can do.....Occasionally, if they get ignored enough, or if the instructors say "ok, now...." and go on, they get the hint....

I'll admit that I talk a lot during class, but I try to ask ?'s that make things clearer to me, or ask about something that I deal with at work, and it's not to show off...it's seeking clarification...although when I do crack a joke, I try to keep it on topic....and everyone always says my jokes at least have some relevance...as opposed to random comments....

I think the best thing to do is talk to your instructor during office hours. Explain to them what is going on but don't put any blame on the people who are disrupting class or name any names. Ask the instructor if there was a way that there could be a 5- 10 min question and answer time after lecture so that way you will get all the information during class. If someone asks a question they could write it down and then ask during this time frame. Most questions that are asked happened to be answered during lecture anyways but most people are too impatient to let the instructor keep on going once a question pops in their head.

You never know by doing this the instructor could be in agreement with you, but doesn't want to impose or seem mean so they let it go on. At the least the instructor will see that you are interested in the course or subject and that you mean no harm and are only wanting to learn and absorb as much information as possible

TELL me about it! there are so many girls in my class who complain about our teacher, complain about the test, complain about not getting a review, complain about how cold the classroom is, complain about the way the test was graded. Have you heard this one? "Well, if everyone did poorly on the test, then obviously they will see it's not us, it has to be the teacher!" I blew that excuse for them when I got a 95 and a 97 on both tests. ha!

hang in there.

As long as there will be challenges..there will be WHINERS, that goes for ANY thing you do in life! They love to band together also--it makes them feel like they are not alone. Often times, they try to get you to join the bandwagon by saying --"Are you as annoyed with that teacher as ME!?" or "Don't you think that test was structured poorly!?"...

They need validation or their own insecurities--so DON'T VALIDATE IT! Whenever those kinds of people get around me in an elevator or outside the classroom I always say the opposite of what they want..."OMG! Don't you think that test was IMPOSSIBLE!? NOBODY PASSED" --"I did..I don't think it was that bad at all, it did have some tricky questions but I studied really hard and am happy with my performance.."

I always stay optimistic, when you start getting around those types of people it brings YOUR vibe down as well--and you will soon be as stressed as them!!

We have the same problem with students complaining and saying that the instructors want to 'weed out' the class. I hate to be around them. Some of these students are back for their second time in the program after flunking out last year. I heard complaining just today. I am loving school, doing really well on the tests so far, and like all the instructors. I am sorry that they had to start over, but I can see how their attitude does not help their situation. They should spend more time studying and stop complaining!:nono:
