screwed by my job 2 wks before school starts!

Today was my first day back to work from vacation, in which i found out I had a meeting with an administrator. She has informed me, that because I am going back to school, and someone else is looking for a part time position, they have decided to split up my current position which I have held for 3 years into two part time positions. I wasn't thrilled about this set up but I wasn't going to argue, I would still retain my benefits. But here's the clincher, the deal is only good until October 12th when the new employees are officially oriented, and the current employees promoted to my level. This means that if they have a full time employee available they will replace both of us with said full timer.

THis all translates into, I will have no job come october.

She gave me no other options, other than if by october someone resigns she will try to work something out.

They wait 2 weeks before school starts to tell me this. All year, infact since october 2006, i have told them about school, and I have told them my school schedule would be thurs fri saturday, that I wanted to put as many hours up until 2pm on thursday, not once did I say I wanted to work part time. I even said that if they needed to make up my hours with my vacation time to keep me as fulltime then I would agree to it. I was lead to believe that a monday through thursday until 2pm schedule was possible up until the week before last when I left for my trip to Barbados. My supervisor even showed me a schedule she was working on to propose to the manager for me. As luck would have it my supervisor went out on maternity leave while I was away on vacation and then when I return the administrator completely blindsides me with this.

I'm surprised at myself at how well I am taking all of this usually im a crying sniveling mess, I haven't shed one tear. I'm just so over that job. I went right to my desk after the meeting and emailed managers that I know in different departments asking them to keep their eyes out for jobs for me. I'm just going to search the web and find something else. If I need to take out extra loans to help with my rent and what not so be it and I also have my uncle who can help me. Im not going to let this get the best of me.

Yesterday I was freaking out and wondering why i was even going to nursing school, this whole situation has solidified that I did make the right choice to go forward with this. I know that I will experience crap like that with other jobs no matter what I do, but at least as a nurse I have the power of options.

sorry this was so long and thanks for listening.....

It is quite usual to have doubt in what may seem like your darkest hour, but this storm shall pass you by like any other. I hope you are able to rebound from your untimely financial situation and turn this into a positive event.

If you are able to acquire additional private loans to secure you financially while you are enrolled in nursing school, think of this "setback" as a possible blessing in disguise.

Perhaps it will come to serve you well as you should have more time on your hands to dedicate to your studies.

Nevertheless, I hope that everything turns out well for you and may you walk out of this episode of life ahead of the game.

Maybe it's because it's early in the morning here and I just woke up, but it seems to me, if I read your post correctly, that if they move you out the door (end up terminating you) through this bit of reorganization of your job position that you should be able to collect unemployment from the state. The trick is that they have to terminate you, basically lay you off, you can't quit. Is this a new manager who doesn't know how the labor laws work? If all this happens, file a complaint with your state labor board, I think this manager will have some explaining to do to her boss (she does have one) and the labor board for her actions.

Here's the thing Daytonite, she AND her boss cooked this one up. She isn't a new manager per-say. She's been in her position for over a year i think....she moved up the ranks.

Just to clarify it use to be two administrators, the one I directly answered too and communicated with quit for another job a month ago. However they both know about everything going on with all the employees.

At the end of the day i see all of this as a blessing in disguise, I wanted out of this job for so long, I was getting to the point where i was feeling nauseated at the thought of coming here and didn't see a way out until now. Yeah its really shady the way they did it but I'm moving on, and I'm not bitter about it, i feel surprisingly relieved.

Clearly you can roll with the punches, stay calm in a crisis, and move on from a bad situation. Hmmmm, sounds like a great nurse in the making to me!

Don't let anything get in your way, and keep your eye on the prize.

Hey you! I was wondering where you've been! :)

Well, it's good that you're relieved about it....Maybe it is a blessing in disguise! Now you'll have more time for your studies. :)

When does school start for you?

It still smells to me. If they lay you off, which is what it sounds like they are cooking up, I'd still file with the state labor board for unemployment. Worst case, your claim is denied; best case, you get a paycheck for the next six months from the state. Guess who the state bills to retrieve the money they pay out to you? [Your old employer and they add fines on as well because they tried to pull a fast one. It's not nice to fool the state department of labor. This is how a lot of small time uneducated managers learn the labor laws--making a mistake in the first place. Then, they never do it again. Employers have to be very careful in the way they terminate employees today.]

I'm so sorry Mystiqx! That sucks!

I second the unemployment thing, I would look into it it make sure it is okay that you collect while you are a student. I am pretty sure it is but I can't remember.

Remember, no one wants loans, but you will be able to pay them back once you graduate, so the important thing is to make sure you graduate!

Good luck, I hope your job will either stop being stressful, or you can find a job that is less stressful so you can concentrate on school.

Hang in there.

Can't collect if you're a f/t student.

These people reek, mystiq. They waited until your defender left on maternity to screw you.

You'll recover. You're bigger than these dog stools you scrape off the bottom of your shoe.

Specializes in acute care.

When I was laid off my job 5 years ago I was a FT student and collected unemployment with an extra couple of weeks because I was in school. This is a blessing in disguise, and this is Someone giving you a little push to find a place where you will truly be happy working. Keep your head up, girl, you're going to nursing school!
