question on internet nursing degrees?

i am starting at a local vo-tech school for my lpn and keep seeing ads on internet degrees are they legit or a joke?

:rolleyes: good question. i often wondered myself if online degrees are legitimate. i would think that employers would be more impressed by a student that attended a physical school rather than a virtual school. there are so many online schools out there but in my opinion nothing beats a "real" school...especially when it comes to nursing. nursing (or any other medical profession) is too "involved" for a online degree.

I am starting my first semester of classes at an online Nursing School. I have already taken several of my prereqs via online learning and have learned as much as students in traditional classrooms...I can tell you that I KNOW I can learn more in a 4 hour session of self study at home than I ever have in a four hour lecture...

I will not deny that online learning is not for everyone...it takes discipline, motivation, and excellent planning skills.

As far as nursing the "real school" experience...is in the clinical work...which I will be completing at a local hospital under the direct supervision of an RN preceptor. By the time I complete my LPN (1st yr) I will have put in a minimum of 384 hours of clinical time. In completing my RN (2nd yr) I will have totaled 600 clinical hours. (no joke :chuckle )

I went to the Deaconess Website -- is the entire program online? I did not see admissions info specific to the online program. DO you have to currently work in the Medical field to be accepted? Are you in Missouri or are you from another state. I am currently also doing online work fro my pre-reqs, and am intrigued by the idea of doing the whole program online. Is your preceptor someone you found or someone the school found fro you? Do they get paid to precept you? When do you start doing clinical work? Do you rotate through differentclinical sites or at least departments? Please let me know how you find the program.

I know one nurse got her BSN and MS online and she is doing fine. But these program require you to have a RN already (guess to get rid of the clinicals?). They are very expensive though.

My nursing school is online and I feel like am learning just as much if not more than on-campus students. By the time I finish I will have completed 766 clinical hours. Our clinicals are one-on-one preceptorships and I have learned so much from the one-on-one attention.

Online learning is not for everyone, but it is credible and becoming more and more necessary since brick and morter schools can only accept a certain amount of students.

Some online and distance nursing programs are fully legitimate and properly accredited. These include Deaconness, Excelsior, and the University of Phoenix. Many people are able to land jobs with online nursing degrees.

The only catch is that California will not license an Excelsior graduate unless (s)he has worked in another state for 2 years and then endorses the out-of-state license into California.

Online education is fairly new so it is important to be a good consumer and investigate the schools BEFORE forking over tuition and spending time and money on something that literally isn't worth the paper it's printed on.

Check the accreditation, talk to grads, talk with HR depts of places you want to work to see if they hire these grads.

That said, I did my LPN and ADN in brick and mortar schools, I did my BSN and MSN online at University of Phoenix and then did a post-MSN CNS certificate at another schoo which was about 50-50 in-class and online.
