Is a Nursing Internship a Smart Idea to Do While Being a Nursing Student- ADVICE?!?

Hi all!

I am in my first semester of nursing school and I do have 2 part time jobs and over a full load of classes (I'm taking 7 classes!). I was considering quitting one of my jobs and try to get an internship at the local hospital across the street from my school. I think it would be smart to get my foot in the door so maybe I have a better chance getting a nursing job after I graduate with my BSN and become an RN. Is this a smart idea?? Is it hard to get a nursing job in a hospital after graduation?? Advice very much appreciated from current nurses or anyone in my situation!

Take it!!!! I applied and interviewed for an internship in school but didn't get it :(. You absolutely must find a way to get your foot in the door in any way possible! I volunteered and while it helped,I got the "you're too nice to work in med/surg" from the med/surg manager- ummmm I am in the volunteer role, in an RN role I will be more assertive- 2 different roles hmph!!! I'm still looking for a job since I graduated in May.

Yes. I got a hospital job right after graduation in part because I did an internship there.

I would kill for a hospital internship. You're already used to working during school, so I would take it. Good luck!

If your part time jobs are not in a hospital, I would drop one of those and do the internship.

Getting any sort of hospital job is difficult as a new nurse especially if you aren't in a rural area.

Yes that is the way to go because that will let you get your foot in the door, plus it looks good on your app or resume. I have applied at a major hospital in my area for a nurse extern job. I am awaiting (cross my fingers) a call back or interview. If I get the job I would quit my part time job.

Also, the fact that I am a part-time worker at my job is what made them try and see if they can do a student nurse extern, graduate nurse intern, and then a new nurse progression with me. I am waiting to hear if they can do it. I work in a regular ward clerk/nursing assistant spot.
