How many classes?

I am starting my first official semester of nursing school on the 25th! Wooo! It has been a long trip here, but I am extremely excited to start official nursing classes instead of chemistry, A&P and other such classes. I only am required one class with lab and clinicals. How many classes do you guys have to take in your first semester? I know it will be hard, but I still think I will have it easy. 1 class sounds pathetic to most people, although I know it will be a tough program ;)

Specializes in Cardiac Stepdown, PCU.

Classes are different with each program, if that isn't obvious by all the other posts! Some programs have one or two classes that encompass all areas of nursing, and others they have separate classes for each: fundamentals, med/surge, peds, etc.. Mine is a "concepts" program, which is one class or two classes that incorporate all aspects of nursing. We don't have separate classes for the different areas. I have a Lab on mondays, lecture on tuesdays, and clinical on wednesdays. I'm actually surprised at how LITTLE time we spend in class. 4 hours of lab, 4 hours of lecture, and 8 hours of clincial a week for the RN program. The LPN program does 8 hours of lab, lecture, and clinical a week. It's rather surprising to me.

We do have other non-nursing classes that we are required to take, like english and A&P and such. If we don't take them before entering the program we are required to take them as corequisites to the nursing class. You can take the classes early, but you can't take them late... if that makes any sense. A&P II is usually a second semester class in our program, I am taking it with first semester classes because I took A&P I with some of my pre-req's. If I didn't take A&P II with the first semester, I'd have to take it with second semester or I would otherwise not get to continue in the program.

Hi Kitkat1212,

Every nursing program is different.. but my 1st semester was : 1.Fundamentals of Nursing Lecture, 2.Lab, 3.Clinical, 4.Intro to Nursing Math/Pharmacology, and 5.Health Assessment, 11 credits total. Good luck and congrats on being accepted.

Never would have thought that everyone's first semester would be so different! My program is quarterly rather than by semester. Each quarter is 11 weeks.

My first quarter classes are,

Intro to Professional Nursing (4 Credits)

Comprehensive Pharmacology (6 Credits)

Nutritional Principles in Nursing (4 Credits)

14 credits my first quarter.

Good luck to everyone on their journey!

My first semester consisted of 4 classes: Foundations (clinical), Health Assessment, Informatics, and Healthy Aging (Gerontology).

Mine was one class plus a new format of taking Pharmacology and lab of course....was a rough quarter for sure! Good luck in your schooling, study hard but try to balance that with free time to relax.

I'm in four classes- three of which have lab and clinical components. But, I'm also in an accelerated BSN program, so I did it to myself by signing up!

Specializes in Neurosurgery, Neurology.

I'm starting next month, and will be taking 4 classes: Fundamentals with Lab/Clinical, Pharmacology with Lab (Dosage Calculations), Health Assessment with Lab, and Transcultural Nursing. So it ends up being like 7 classes with the labs. Can't wait!

Everyone has their own pace. No need to feel pathetic. I'll be starting my program on the 25th as well! We have to take 4 classes, a lab and clinicals. This includes: patho, health assessment, health assessment lab, patient centered care, leadership, and 2 clinical days. I already have homework due by Monday! ? I'm so nervous, but so finally ready to take it all on!

Specializes in Med/ Surg/ Telemetry, Public Health.

I just graduated 8/7/14 from a ADN program. I just got accepted to a RN to BSN program that starts Saturday. I am taking 2 lectures classes; transitions and health assessment, and also a health assessment lab. I am excited but nervous, plus I am still studying for NCLEX RN test coming up.

So interesting to read! I am in an accelerated program (so have a Bachelors already) and our first semester was 5 months long and consisted of 26 credits...... I somehow made it. You will be fine with your class! just study hard and stay on top of your work! Good Luck!
