Every nursing student's nightmare

I have the flu :crying2::crying2::crying2: or at the very least flu like symptoms. I've been sick since Monday night. What a nightmare. I don't have a fever thank god, but I've just been so weak, lathargic, shaking, body aches, runny nose, sneezing, no real apitite, its just awful. I can't keep my eyes open long enough to read one word of my text book. I have a ton of work to do and I can't do it cause I all want to do is sleep. I stand up for two seconds and just become so exhausted. why me???

I think getting sick like this is every nursing student's nightmare, I've been dreading getting sick, and it just crept up on me monday night with no warning.

What the one thing that you dread happening to you while in nursing school?

During my second semester of nursing school, I developed a severe ear infection. I had a history of chronic ear infections, but this one was so bad that I had a constant stream of serosanguinous drainage running down the side of my face. I had to miss three days of clinical and class. I totally know how frustrating it is to be taken out of the game early.

Just stay in contact with your instructors/director and keep them up to date on your status. If you keep them in the loop, they are probably more likely to let you make up the work you missed as opposed to not letting you make it up. Email some classmates and ask them to email you the notes from the classes you missed. If you've missed any clinical days, I'm sure they will let you make them up somehow. We always have a certain number of "make up" days built into each semester.

Hope you feel better real soon. Just try to concentrate on getting enough sleep and getting better. School will still be there when you get back.

My car breaks down and I will have to take metro to school:angryfire

Oh mystiqx that sucks! I know how you feel, I was sick last week! It started in my head and then moved to my chest. I left lab early friday (when I decided it was a cold and not allergies) so I wouldn't contaminate other students. I also missed clinical on saturday morning. I will say I got scared reading what other people had to say about being sick on Allnurses. They were all about "i go to clinical sick unless I am feverish or bleeding out of every orifice" (well, okay I exagerate, but still....)

Our division chair was really nice and said it was best to stay home (she even said "Hope you feel better soon".) I did make a stop at employee health to get checked out just so it was all documented.

The only good thing is that it is way better to be sick now when the material is lighter than later in the semester. Hopefully we will be immune to anything the other students pass around later on!

Take care, Hope you feel better soon

Don't forget to get your flu shot anyway!

When I get the flu I always make sure I arrest it asap because I hate having the joint pains (which are so so bad when I get them!!!) and the body weakness and having to do clinicals when you're not feeling well...

I was outside the bathroom door one morning when my hyperactive dogs began chasing each other and one of them headbutted my right leg causing one of the phalanges in my foot to dislocate. Omg it was dreadful, like I was howling in pain and I couldn't go to class. I had to think fast because the next day was my clinical, and I didn't wanna miss it...so instead of going to the hospital, my bf helped me go to this one traditional healer dude who works magic on people's bones. He pulled my toes and jerked my leg and after a few minutes, voila! the phalange was back to its original alignment. The next day I was still kind of limping but at least I didn't miss out on anything. hehehe.

Hope you'll feel better soon. You need all the bed rest....

This sounds exactly like what me and my two kids where going through. I don't know if we had the stomach flu or food illness. All I know is it was awful and I hope and pray that you will get better.

I worry about getting sick, or the car breaking down, or a snowstorm, or any other reason I can't make it to school...that would be bad, very bad. It must stink knowing how much studying you have to do and not being able to get through it. I hope you are feeling all better!!

If you have a Starbucks nearby, go buy a box of their Tazo Chai tea...I drink it alot when I'm sick, and it gives you a "pick up" without the caffeine nausea that you can sometimes get.

chicken noodle soup and OJ mixed with sprite/7up is my recommendation. I know there's probably no true curative value in either, but mentally they make you feel better, which might make you feel better. (Knocking wood) I haven't been sick yet since I started clinicals, but we are allowed one absence per semester as long as we give at least (I forget) 1 or 2 hours notice. If you still feel incredibly awful on clinical day, I'd use an absence if you are allowed. If not, drag yourself in and wear a mask I guess.

omg!!!! i have been sick the last 3.5 weeks. seriously!!! upper respiratory, ear infection....i missed 4 out of 6 lectures (adn evening/weekender program), missed a week of work (lpn in ltc) and had an exam this past wednesday. you don't think i was sweating bullets??? i'm still not 100%, but hey....gotta keep plugging along.

thought for sure i bombed the exam, but ended up w/ a 79!!!! it's passing and that's what's important.

all you can do in this situation is do what you can. there's no way i could have made it to any of the classes or work. i was pretty much in the bed 20 out of 24 hrs!!!

tis the season i guess!!! :uhoh3:

Something happening to my kids at school and no one is able to reach me at clinical cuz I cant carry my cell on the floor and cant take personal phone calls (and my current instructor doesnt return 99% of her pages). UGH!!!!!
