Ebooks in Nursing School?

Hello all! Nursing school starts in a month and the school hasn't sent out acceptance letters yet, but I'm trying to be hopeful and prepare just in case--that's a lot of money to spend if you haven't budgeted for it ahead of time!

Has anyone used ebooks instead of regular hard-copy textbooks in nursing school? This wasn't an option when I was in college the first time, so I don't know anyone personally who has used them in lieu of regular books. I have a kindle, but I worry about it being more difficult to navigate in class or when studying, and I don't know if I would prefer to have a book that I can quickly flip through or not. I'm attracted to the fact that ebooks are cheaper though! I love my kindle, but I know page numbers will show up differently on my small screen as opposed to a large textbook, etc. Any suggestions or comments about your experience? Any advice is appreciated!

Pageburst Store - Digital Textbooks and Educational Materials

You can authorize two computers which is nice bc you can share expense with one of your classmate.

Cheers.

doing what the last posted said sounds reasonable...I was considering getting an e-book & downloading things such as my drug guide, lab guide, and taber's to. Just so that I can take them to clinicals with me but my instructor said no because it has internet on it, so I'm looking for one without internet, not sure that is possible lol.

If it was either or, I would choose the hard copy because what if for some reason the e-book doesn't work? What if you lose it or its stolen? You'll be using them a lot. I highlight & sometimes write in my books so I'm not sure if an e-book can allow you to write in it. We aren't allowed any laptops (until last semester), phones, ipads, anything with communication options inside our building or clinical's so I would ask first?

What I know about the nook Touch:

It really doesn't have "internet" in that you can only connect to the Barnes and Noble ebook store with it.

It does not have to be connected to the internet to be fully functional, the only time I even turn my wireless on it to buy books.

You can highlight and make notes. It also has a very good search function.

The best solution to loss or theft is to buy your ebooks over the internet in a non-DRM format and manage them via a client such as Calibre or Adobe Digital Editions (both free). A copy of the book stays on your computer and is copied to the eReader so if it's lost or stolen you still have the books to load onto a new advice.

I have a couple thousand books on my nook Touch, everything from novels to nursing books/references, knitting patterns, cookbooks and magazine subs. I did pay the extra $30 for a 2 year drop and spill warranty just in case.

I love my nook, it goes with me everywhere.

I researched the heck out of ereaders before I bought one, much as I love Amazon I hate their management of the Kindle. I won't buy one even as a gift.

If I have the option, I'll definitely take advantage of ebooks for while I'm at school and actual textbooks for at home. My nursing school campus has a lot of stairs, lots! I'll do anything to save my back and legs if I can.

I couldn't access the link, it shows "Sorry, the page (or document) you have requested is not available."

I am wondering if you could possible update the link please? Thanks

I am also looking for Wong's Nursing Care of Infants and Children 8th edition by Hockenberry and Wilson- pdf file Thanks again!

I use hard copy and ebook and own both versions. Expensive but what can i say its an investment.

Hardcopy i use libraries, and occasionally I take it with me to school but usually book stays home while I travel with my ipad and study the ebook between class. I loaded all class notes, powerpoints and what not on my ipad, my prof was very impressed that his students were using cutting edge technology and occasionally borrowed our tablets to play with just to see what apps we were using and how we used the tech.

SO with that said do some research to see if books you're using is going to be supported on the equipment you're using it with. Most ebooks textbooks use flash to display it and to date apple's ipad doesnot support flash SO if you get ipad you'll have to be creative and or find other technically inclined people to help you get your ebooks on it. Seems easier to get a non apple platform.

I went ipad ... after all who can resist buying it and then justifying the purchase saying its for school / ebook :) I ran out of stuff to buy .. ipad, iphone, labtop .. keyboard for the ipad. Sokies i admit it I'm a techie shopa holic and while all this expense isn't needed for nursing school it makes me happy and I can say i'm tech savy lol.

I have an Android tablet, and about 6 weeks ago Elsevier released a beta version of their Pageburst for the Android. Previously it was only available for iOS. It's working beautifully. If your textbooks are from Elsevier and you want to try the ebook thing, I highly recommend it. It allows for highlighting and notes and syncs them between devices. I have it on my PC and my tablet.

does anyone have the medsurg iggy 6th edition ebook?

Our nursing school 8 semester curriculum came with a bundle of books that we bought that was to last us the entire 2.5 years of nursing school (BSN program). During our first semester, we saw that some of the books were actually e-books. When it came to Pharmacology, none of us ... and I do mean NONE of us ... liked the pharm e-book, so most of us ended up just buying the hardcopy of the book by the end of the first week! I used both. I could use the e-book to do a search for a specific item and see where it was all throughout the book, but I used the hardcopy for actual reading and note-taking. The new hardcopies also come with codes to get the e-books for free, usually.
