Anyone Studying Yet?

I start my ADN classes on Sept 20th and am trying to get motivated to go over my dosage calc, anatomy, and med term books. Has anyone started studying yet and what helped motivate you? I already know that during my orientation I will have to take a math test and recieve a reading assignment for the first week of class! Any ideas?!

thanks julee

I have been studying my pharmacology book. When my summer started I took the total number of pages in the book and divided it by the number of weeks my summer was to get the number of pages I needed to get through in a week. I have been doing 30 pages a week and have made it well past the half way mark. When school starts I am hoping I will not have to worry too much about how to solve the problems and can concentrate on all of the other aspects of the class.

I start in Sept too. Normally when I have time off I do the same thing as Jill -- take what I want to get covered and divide it up by the number of weeks etc.. and work my way through it. This summer tho, my biggest need is to relax. After years of pre-reqs I finally hit burn out a few months ago and one of my biggest concerns after I got out of school in June was that I would go into the most important phase of my plan (nursing school) without the proper motivation. So I took the summer off and am spending it with my family and just doing the things I want to do. Occasionally I do some reading on nursing care planning, review my dosage math, look at my CNA procedures.. but I'm laying no guilt trips on myself. I do it as I feel like it.. my only goal right now is getting my enthusiasm back! And I can feel that it's working!! Now, that said, I do plan to get back into the swing of things when my daughter goes back to school the first of Sept and spend those last few weeks before MY school starts going through my dosage math, CNA, and NCLEX review book in a methodical way (such as what Jill described above). So, I would suggest that you review your goals: what do you want to accomplish this summer? Then put yourself on a plan to meet that goal. But I wouldn't get too overloaded.. after all once we're back in school we're going to be living and breathing it practically 24/7.. sometimes it's good to take time for yourself so that you're later up for such a challenge. Good luck!

Having just finished my first semester in an ADN program this past Spring, the best advice I can give you is to get your texts and syllabuses ahead of time if possible to get familiar with the material in advance. Be sure to go over what a Care Plan is and what it is comprised of, and become familiar with nursing diagnosis versus medical diagnosis. Go over your dosage calcs for sure. There are many sites over the Internet that you can find with a quick search, but here's a couple good ones I found useful:

As for motivation, that's unique to you. I'm not a big fan of studying myself, but you're entering a field where the there's a ton of it, so as long as your desire to achieve the goal of RN is kept in sight, that's all you should need. Good luck!

Actually I have studied a little bit. Not as organized as Jill. Read about half of the IV therapy made easy. Although quite a bit of it was over my head. Atleast when I go back to school some of it will be familier. Actually I went on this web site for a few minutes for some reason it helps keep me motivated. I am starting my second year of a ADN program in 5 weeks. I am planning on going over some of the drugs that are more common, math, abreviations, and the skills that we learned last year in lab. I also have read the chapter on the liver since we will be revisiting this next year. Well I suppose I should go study now since my 2 year old is sleeping. Now that I am taking a break for summer I honestly don't know how I did it last year!

I have been reviewing my medical math and looking through my fundamentals book. I am trying to stay motivated but with the next 2 years of my life being focused on school I find it hard to concentrate when I think of how fast my free time is running out. :uhoh21:

But I just finished summer school!!!! :rotfl:

I was actually going to take a few weeks off and then pick up the books again about 2-3 weeks before classes start at the end of August. In the mean time, it's work, work, work, work......

Nope. I'm having a hard enough time studying for Micro and A&P without also studying for a class that hasn't even started yet!

I've been trying to do some reading also. I have lots of Med Calc books, care-plan books, and got a copy of "How to Survive and Maybe even Love nursing school", which was recommended by my school.

But, in the same breath, I'm not knocking myself silly if I DON'T study something every day. Some days I don't even glance at it, and others I'm quizzing myself on normal values and calculations, and brushing up again on my A&P.

i'm kinda studying...i bought the dosage calc. made incredibly easy book at the beginning of the summer and now am gettin more in depth with it. hopefully it'll make things a little easier

I finished my first year of RN school in May. I gave myself till the end of May to not pick up any school books. I actually read a couple of great novels. :chuckle

June 1, I began reviewing my stuff and reading/reviewing Med/surg made incredibly easy. July 1, I started reviewing my pharmacology (it sure makes a lot more sense now :imbar !!). I've also been doing a little practice here and there on drug calculations. I plan on really concentrating on it next month.

I really need to break out the book and get started on my assigned reading. I am going on vacation to NH in 2 weeks so maybe I'll wait until I'm relaxing at the cabin by the lake (*BIG sigh*) to start. Bleh I was trying not to think about this but this thread really kicked me in the butt. Back to work!
