Any downside to book debinding??

I've read so many positive posts from those who have had their gigantic books debinded, but I am hesitant to do so. Does anyone regret having debinded their textbooks? If so, why?

I've never done it, but I think the biggest setback would be that you've probably shot down its resale chances. (I think. Maybe they could be rebound after you're done?)

I don't like debinding only because when I am studying chapters later in the book I usually need to refer to one of the earlier chapters in the book. When I debind, I tend to just carry one or two chapters. If I then need to refer to other chapters (or the index or something) that I didn't carry it becomes a problem and I can't achieve the goal of understanding that particular point.

I like having the whole book so that I can go back and forth especially when I need to double check and refer to old chapters on different points.

That's a very good point...I think I may pass on having them debinded, since I do tend to flip around in the book to the glossary or index when I don't fully understand something. Thanks!;)

IMO debinding is not a good idea and I personally would never debind a nursing book.

I've never done it because there have been several ocasions where our reading assignment was a section in a chapter, to drag around just pieces of a chapter when yuo might need to refer back to sections not specifically pointed out in your reading outline you could find yourself up the proverbial creek, get some page flags and a sharpie, label with chapter or page numbers and then in teh corner what exam # that section applies too

I don't debind--I feel like it would disorganize me PLUS I often have to use 10 or more chapters per unit to get my reading done (have had up to 300 pages)--if I pulled sections out of chapters I would have a mess. We use the same med surg book each semester and I feel like I would have chapters/paper EVERYWHERE! I'm freaked out enough as it is...

Also, I won't resell by Brunners Med Surg--I think I'll need it as a new GN and for the NCLEX studying I am planning.

:)

I'd be afraid of losing pages.

I'm not going to debind my books. I won't resell them but I love books and it just feels like destroying them. I think it would be easier for the pages to get messed up (torn, etc) and I tend to be disorganized so I'm also afraid of losing pages or whole chapters! I think I'll buy a rolling backpack to save my aching back instead.

I debind my books. I was very hesitant at first and didn't get in done when others did. I love books and was worried about losing pages. Some of the pages in these huge books are very flimsy and thin. I carry around a rolling backpack. I did end up doing it after a few weeks. Some of the wholes did tear and I had to put the little white sticky circles on the wholes to keep together. Last semester I debinded right from the beginning. I am sure it depends on how your school teaches. I was able to take out only the chapters that was assigned for that test and carry. There were some pages from other chapters I photocopied and always keep in my notebook for reference. There were some I put in my clinical notebook for quick reference like lab values or just pages that had a good description of terms to use for documentation that were scattered around the book. I would definately suggest waiting till you see how the system works at your school. I didn't lose any pages from my book but you must take the chapters from your notebook and put back into the larger book right after test to not get it mixed up or lost.

God Bless,

Mary Ann;)
