Would you want to be your own nurse? Your own patient?

There's no way I'd want me for a patient! I do think I do pretty decently as a nurse though, and like to think I wouldn't mind being my own patient. Whoa, that sounded confusing. Good question!

I have to agree with blondy2061h; I think I would like to be my own nurse, because I'm pretty nice and compassionate. As for being my pt... Never in a million year! I'm an awful pt, needy and always questionning everything :loveya:

I've thought about this a lot since I plan to have a baby in a few years on the same unit where I work as a labor and delivery nurse.

I will probably be an annoying pt since I plan to try to go without an epidural and I'll want to move around and make it impossible to stay on the monitor. I'll also probably refuse pitocin and rupturing of membranes unless really necessary (more of an issue with my doctor than nurse)

On the other hand I won't ask stupid questions and I'll know how to unplug myself from the monitor to go to the bathroom without bothering my nurse.

I'd be my own nurse though!

I'd nurse myself, because I do a darn good job....It's critical care and I am all over everything and very in tune with whats going on with my patients... with that being said, I wouldn't want to be the patient of myself just for the same reasons... checking everything, constantly assessing (it's critical care, remember) hourly accuchecks, bp cuff poofing and unpoofing. Ah, as I sit here and type this, I guess I just may dread myself after 3 12's in a row.... lol ~Ivanna

I would totally be my own nurse and my own patient. I'm an excellent nurse, and because I know what it's like, I'm a good patient.

Oh dear... you don't want to know.... I am a excellent patient with an excelent nurse but you need to stay away from me if you see me just like a carrier of health insurrance and you advice me to take care of my health based on my insuarnce not based on my health condition.

I am a nurse....excellent if you let me in my pace with my nurse judgement and don't hurry or force me to fallow without thinking, ilogical creapy thinks in the name of the sharing costs, cut the costs, policies and procedures. A nurse think at first at least and always at PEOPLE - PATIENTS, not at patient's insurance or at how to earn much more from health care insurance.

At nurse need to communicate to speak, to asses and reasses, to be true!

I wish to be my own nurse and my own patient... because if is in this world one chance to be much more healthy and to recieve the perfect helath care I will know it and i will tell you... but if is possible to not be so cheap.....if you want somenthing cheap and fulfill your ego and keep your money in the pocket and negociate each and every little think like in the market......... I am so so sorry.... I could not help you......but I will be always honest with you....

yes, i would want me as a nurse.

yes, i would want me as a pt IF the nurse was competent.

no, i would not want me as a pt IF the nurse was incapable, a master of disaster.

but basically speaking, i suck as a pt and rock as a nurse.

I read so many complaints on here; either about patients or nurses we work with. It got me wondering. Would you want to have YOU as a patient? Would you want to have YOU as a nurse? Really think about it and answer!:loveya:

I wouldn't mind having me as a patient but I wouldn't want me as a nurse. I believe myself to be a PITA and would avoid me if at all possible.

I would not mind having myself as a pt because when I am sick I just want to be left alone. Do what you must, give me my pain meds if needed, and leave me alone. You would not have to walk around visitors because I would tell everyone to go home and come to see me when I feel better (at home). I hate dealing with other people when I am sick and I am blunt and to the point when I am sick "leave me alone".

I believe that I would like myself as a nurse. I am one of those in and out nurses. Go in do what needs to be done and leave. I do not feel the need to chat it up with someone who is sick and just wants to sleep. I will give you the best care I can give you even if you yell and act mean. I can promise you even if you are the biggest butt head in the world; if you are in pain you will get your pain meds as soon as humanly possible.

I would have me as a nurse, but not me as a patient. I'm not as compliant as I should have been.

I was THAT patient that climbed over the raised bedrail to sneak to the toilet after I was specifically told to call for a bedpan. Another time, I was THAT post-op patient that had to be forced to use my incentive spirometer and ambulate more than I wanted to - and I knew better. Nope, I don't want to get stuck with me.

I would say yes to both! Being a kidney transplant patient for 20 of my 25 years of life and now being a nurse myself, I have learned things from both perspectives and can appreciate both being a patient and being frustrated with a nurse and also being a nurse and being frustrated with the patients.

I would love to be my own nurse because I'm compassionate & caring but also I'm very thourough & meticulous and stay on top of everything. I'm a patient advocate, & when I don't know something I'm not afraid to ask others to make sure the patient gets the best care possible. I know I would be well taken care of.

I would definitely be my own patient as well because I know nurses have a job to do that does not include running to get my family & friends food, drinks, blankets, fixing tvs and all that frivolous stuff....they have much more importnat things going on that patients who have no background in health care never seem to understand. If I'm well enough you better believe I'm doing those things myself because I want to get out of the hospital ASAP and get back to normal. Also, I know enough that I don't ask all those incredibly stupid questions that just makes your jaw drops when a patient asks it. I do question lots of things such as what drugs they nurse is hanging or pushing, what labs have been ordered, etc but that comes from 25 years of being a kidney transplant patient and wanting to stay on top of my health....not so much to check up on the nurse although I definitely want to make sure things are being done correctly :)
