would like day shift to remember there are two others!

People usually bring the 'thank you' gifts and goodies during the day shift. It's not unheard of for patient's families to leave a box of chocolates, boxes of cookies, whatever for the nurses as a 'thanks' for taking care of their loved ones. I wish it were more often, naturally, but sometimes, they do this very nice thing.

Except, of course, that the evening staff might see the last bits of it, and then there's NOTHING left for the night shifters. This is the third time in the last two weeks I've found a nice card on the break table, addressed to "the wonderful nurses" who took care of Patient X....and an empty platter of whatever used to be on it. Guess the only "wonderful nurses" are on 7-3!

Then again, on the VERY rare occasions when someone sends something in for all three shifts (different boxes or baskets), we STILL come up short: somehow, it's already been opened and partially eaten before the FIRST night shifter gets there. The evening's answer to that? "oh, it was like that when I came in". Ok, whatever.

Just a bit of consideration for other co-workers would be SO nice. Vent over.

My story is from a little different point of view.....we have a wonderful activities department where I work, always having little parties for the residents with all kinds of good snacks! Well, whenever the party is over, the activities girl comes around to the units and lets everyone know "there is plenty of food left if you want to come get some!" Well, me being the good nurse I am :D, I wait until I am finshed with what I am doing to fix me a plate, unlike other staff members who tear off quicker than speedy gonzales.

By the time I got there, there was like one celery stick left! (I'm not even exaggerating!) I was starving! I saw CNA's, nurses, ect. taking plates piled high with fruit, cookies, pigs n blankets, little sandwhichs, ect, into the breakroom to save for their lunch time. I know this was wrong, but as soon as they walked out, I went to the fridge and started eating off their plates!!! I know that is kinda gross, but I was so mad! I had such bad heart burn after cramming all that food down my throat so fast!

That's great!! I can actually picture you doing this. lol I don't blame ya at all. Serves them right.

What peeves me is that when our day shift had a really busy day, the manager buys them lunch or dinner for after their shift. The doctors have even bought lunch for them. But we could have every nurse tripled and get 2 traumas and 3 codes but all we get is the graham crackers and ginger ale we steal from the kitchen.

I work nights too- this is really petty.

Have a night shift pot luck, and let days get the dregs. Or have a baking day at home and save it all for your shift.

Nights CAN have treats too.

Our 7-7 charge nurse is always bakiing... she bakes just for the heck of it... someone's birthday, someone passed boards, etc...so we can count on a cake or brownies when she is working. Last Sunday, she brought in a pan of brownies for my birthday (which was the week before, and I was off) and for me and the other PCT who had made it to the magical 1 year milestone.

I cut the brownies up into 9 squares which was exactly how many nurses and techs we had that night, and everyone got one.

One of the docs bought us pizza for us giving her Grammy such good care.. and of course, Dayshift hogged it all down... along with the bagels from Panera Bread that came in this morning... Still, I think we get the better end of the deal because our evening Charge always brings something good in for all of us.

Yeah our manager has bought day shift pizza or Mr.Pita when short staffed. What does nights get? NOTHING. We have been tirpled or just had a crazy assignment with a pt who should have been singled and plus admits to the unit. We don't get to eat and we get nothing except of course the lorna dunes or the grahmcrackers, or cheese and crackers, and maybe apple or orange juice , or milk if we have it.

At Christmastime, our nurse manager made up a beautiful huge basket full of goodies, snacks, etc. It was huge. Not only was most of the stuff gone through, someone had the ********* nerve to take the basket home with them! Arrrggghhh Unbelievable!

I never have a problem getting to treats brought in by family members. Hardly anyone I work with will even touch them, even if they are store-bought (they are a germaphobic bunch). It honestly doesn't bother me, so I always get it pretty much to myself. lol.

it is so like that where i am. it's frustrating. we have had huge party trays cookie trays from docs who were thoughtful enough to send for both shifts, sadly nights never sees it. we have had days split up the second tray and take it home or just eat it all. sick really.:argue::angryfire
